MICHIKO & HATCHIN #4 - - Watch & Learn

Anime by way of HBO (or Focus Features, if you prefer).

Would one of you more attentive lunatics mind clearing something up for me? I assumed that our titular duo were intended to be seen as a biological mother/daughter team - - or, at least, one that still seems likely to be so despite a bit of dramatic ambiguity. However, a couple episodes back, a few of you acted like the connection is supposed to be more figurative.

Did I miss something along the way here, or are some of you just picking a different stance in this open-ended question?

Whether its namesake is of blood relation or not, MICHIKO & HATCHIN continues to show me things that I really haven’t ever seen in anime up until now. Usually, when you say something like that, it’s referring to a bunch of heady sci-fantasy concepts and bleeding edge eye candy. While this continues to be a beautiful show, I’m referring more to its handling of adult subject matter that generally seems to be taboo in mainstream anime. The strip club, the drug use, the sexy vulgarity… those are all “goods” I’ve seen on display in many a live-action crime flick, sure. But I’m really scratching my head to think of any instances where they popped up in any of the hundreds of individual episodes I’ve watched here.

On the Vice Pit, we often get asked about which titles are suitable to introduce anime to the uninitiated. We always say that it isn’t one-size-fits-all situation, and you’ve got to find the glove that fits the individual’s hand. As such, I’d heartily recommend this to those with an appetite for premium cable shows on HBO, Showtime, et al. Again and again, I have to remind myself that I’m watching an anime here, because it certainly doesn’t feel like one.

Anyway, poor Pepe Lima. Though, I’d feel a little more sympathetic to her plight if she maybe tried to ask for help first before she ripped our heroines off. Then again, that would’ve kept us from 20 minutes of wonderfully outrageous cat-fighting, so perhaps it’s for the best that she didn’t know better.

Watch this episode, "Stray Cat Milky Way" here and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode here.

As I recall, Michiko was in Jail when her old "friend"/warden brings a picture of a baby to her. Now you could say that Michiko could've been the mother, and the baby was taken away from her; but from what I remember, Michiko seemed stunned that this kid existed.

That brings up an issue of infidelity, though. If this dude loved her so much, why didn't she have a child with her?

Also, if this is her child, why doesn't she just say so? Maybe the show's being intentionally vague with this like it's being vague about Hana's dad being alive.

Woot ! Seen this posted then went an watched then read the article.Few things here of note.

1st "sexy vulgarity" eh thats gona vary as much as what people think is vulgar times what people think is sexy.Which equals your milage may vary. Some could argue Black Lagoon to Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine .

2nd the level of detail is impressive ."Eye candy" mmmm .

3rd when Michiko Malandro was on the bike i thought ..

......should be playing.Wow i feel old now that is 1974 sheesh.

4th but more importantly my guess on the pic,the tatoo, an Michiko Malandro as the mother. Now i have not viewed ahead but my guess now is the picture was a mesage to Michiko Malandro to watch over Hana Morenos .Because we know Hatchin does not have the tatoo. We also know she says Michiko is not her mother.

We also know Michiko is clever but not um smart. So its posible she got things confused. Also its posible i have things confused! Because i dont rember her talking about giving birth .

@Marshal Victory: You are right about one thing: you have not watched ahead. ;)

They act mother-daughter or older sister-little sister sometimes but they share no blood relation.

MICHIKO & HATCHIN continues to show me things that I really haven’t ever seen in anime up until now.

M&H, Kaiba, Welcome to Irabu's Office, Tatami Galaxy, and a handful of others immediately spring to mind as shows people have missed whenever I hear sentiment about how all modern anime is the same or doesn't try to do anything different.

Anyways, glad you're enjoying this one. It's a pretty great series on all fronts.

@sickVisionz: I really think their can be a good argument that modern anime runs more trends hot an cold sorta thing.Looking back im finding intresting shows in 1996 even with better animation than todays .Which makes one wonder to is it writer by comity or art by comity thats shaping things.Or just "the old days" syndrom from growing longer in the tooth.

But this quote "MICHIKO & HATCHIN continues to show me things that I really haven’t ever seen in anime up until now." is why i watch anime . For the new things you will not see outa hollyweird.

Hatchin DOES have the tattoo of the Monstro Preto gang on her stomach. It's briefly shown in one of the episodes. Also, Michiko is not Hatchin's mother.

@SirShazar: up to this point tho its not shown.Actualy its existance i denied at this point.
