MICHIKO & HATCHIN #17 - - Watch & Learn

Hana's making this face because she's looking at something naughty.

I guess it goes to show that sometimes, when you break one trope in the name of realism, you wind up having taking on an equally unrealistic conceit in return. We all know that animators like to simplify things by letting characters only have one outfit (or, at least, one “civilian” outfit that they’ve got on when they’re not in their super suit), so it’s impressive that the crew here has made a point of giving our leads new digs with each episode. Actually, it’s doubly impressive considering that they’ve put in the effort of making these duds actually relevant to contemporary fashion.

However, that then begs the question of how this duo is able to keep track of so many nice clothes when they’re on the run and being actively pursued by no less than three determined parties. Give a little, take a little, right?

I’ve said before that, in a lot of ways, this show feels like a modern version of SAMURAI CHAMPLOO, and this ditty particularly recalled the one episode that was more-or-less a travelogue feature on Asian transgender theater. I’m starting to suspect that one of the reasons this is set in a pseudo-Brazil, and not the real Brazil, is that the crew gets more license to throw as many disparate subjects into the strew as they’d like to without being constrained by the country's real demographics.

Anyway, we’re sort-of at the point now where I’m just looking for ways to rephrase my enjoyment of the show’s distinctive blend of crime, slapstick and culture. The stand-outs this episode were definitely Michiko’s clever “snap shot memories” of being pick-pocketed and Hana’s “domestic disturbance” with the young transvestite. Regarding the latter, I guess it shows that she’s still only halfway through her growth as character. She’s standing up to mistreatment that’s a lot like her early home life, now - - but she’s still folding to it after only a little bit of resistance from the person mistreating her. I guess there's always room to grow, right?

We’ve only got about five episodes left, now; so I’m seriously thinking of just marathoning the rest of the series and doing a cumulative write-up. I think that’s what all of you lunatics would prefer, anyway. Stay tuned.

Watch this episode, “Buckets of Blood! Opera That Stirs the Heart" here and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode here.

Psuedo Brazil?

The Southeastern region of Brazil is the ethnically most diverse part of the country. Whites make up 58.8% of its population, and those of mixed-race and African descent make up, together, 40.2%. It has the largest percentage of Asian Brazilians, composing 0.8%, and small Amerindian community (0.2%).

In total, Asians make up 0.28%of a population of 200+ mil. That's about 560,000 Asian people, and the gang have managed to run into barely a handful. So while this show is indeed crazy, it's not that crazy.

Yeah, which is why it's puzzling that the show's gone on this extended of conceit of saying the show's set in a fictitious country that's like Brazil, but not actually Brazil.

@No_name_here: Maybe not to be totally beholden to recreating Brazil bit by bit, but it's mostly inspired by Brazil.
