Michael Moore to Make Documentary on Akihabara?

Be scared children

Michael Moore, comedian and professional rabble rouser, brings to mind one word... demagogue. Built around one-sided arguments, his topics (right, wrong, indifferent) tend to inspire a lot of irked feelings on both sides of the debate.

So, imagine my absolute shock/fear when I hear that Michael Moore was trolling around Akihabara, (NSFW link site) making observations about how "weird" everything is. You know, Japan's easy, easy pickings for terrible generalizations, but the idea of Moore droning on about hikkimori and train molesters makes me want to retch.

That said, here's a few little anecdotes from his trip.

Walking around Akihabara he exclaime “A lot of unnecessary things are being sold here.” This was followed soon after with “Shopping may brighten the spirits, but they’re just fooling themselves.”

However, my favorite was when Moore visited a maid cafe. After being greeted with the traditional “okaerinasaimase, goshujin-sama!” (Welcome master!) he responded with a firm “I’m not your master! Everybody’s equal.”

  UGH!

EDIT: check out the actual videos from Japan Probe for more insight. The clips they are pulled from paint a very different picture from the liners retrieved from Sankaku Complex, that regrettably were re-transcribed on our page. While he still occasionally seemed judgmental or uncomfortable, the tone was more jovial, or in response to being the recipient of such attention.

Dear Michael One-Trick-Pony Moore,

Please don't do a guerrilla doc on Akihabara. The otaku there scare easily, especially when it comes to loud, obese foreigners who shove microphones in their faces. The damage you would do to the natives might be irreparable.

Plus I don't want to deal with a) additional outraged otaku and/or b) even more outraged parents who watch your film and assume that their kids who watch Pokemon and Naruto are in fact watching porn, or are being groomed to become 2D porn addicts.

No love,

Me

P.S. No one should care what Michael Moore thinks about Akihabara. Guns? Sure. Politics? His opinion's no worse than Bill O'Reily and company's. But Akihabara? Who on earth would give a damn?

I hate Michael Moore, i hate his movies and i dislike his opinions, but do i give a cr@p about this? no because bad publicity is publicity, don`t feed the troll.

He just has no sense of humor or light in his life, does he?
Matteon Dec. 17, 2009 at 12:27 p.m.
And yet there will be people who go watch it because Moore is ranting for an hour and half.

Isn't there enough subjects in America to keep him occupied?  This tactic screams out "Hey, look at me, look at where I am".  Here's to hoping he quietly goes away.

Someone should do a commentary on HIM

If he did that then no one would bother watching it.
I stand corrected. |

Way to have a misleading headline (and "protect" yourself by using a question mark)!

As far as I know from watching the videos on JapanProbe, Moore was only taking a tour around Akihabara with the assistance of a Japanese TV show and probably has no actual intentions of shooting any part of a documentary there. I found his comments to be in good humor and not as insensitive as many other Americans might be (I may have made the same remark if I were in a maid cafe).

As far as his films go, I think they have a good message but he inserts himself too often as a documentarian.

Thanks Kelleth

Wow selfish and hypocritical. How disappointing.
Slimon Dec. 17, 2009 at 2:15 p.m.
I saw this on Japundit or something. He told a guy that wearing a mask isn't any better then not. True or not that is just getting in someone's business for no reason. Don't talk down to someone if you don't speak their language.
constanzadellarosaon Dec. 17, 2009 at 2:22 p.m.
I used to like some of his documentaries, but he has been doing the same subject over and over, so Michael, get over it. Keep teasing the NRA people or just get a life.
wwfunderakeron Dec. 17, 2009 at 2:47 p.m.
Very disappointed, who cares what he thinks anyway.

@RockmanBionics:
Yeah, I don't hate the guy either. I even agree with his points sometimes, but I feel he often takes things too far. Some people just don't deserve to be accosted, and on film his style just comes off as though he's at a cut throat debate that only one person showed up for.

I honestly didn't catch the Japan Probe article. Sankaku put the idea in my head, but the information could easily be interpreted this way. The abrasive quotations and guerrilla recording are pretty synonymous with his films. Sorry if you felt it was deceptive on our part.
Nebson Dec. 17, 2009 at 2:59 p.m.

Wow, people are taking this WAY too seriously.  The video of his trip has been up for a couple days now, & it's actually pretty funny & light-hearted.  I suggest they watch it before commenting on it.

Enjoy being brainwashed by Fox News, folks!
