Media Blasters Rescues Record of Lodoss War OVA & TV

Good news for classic fantasy fans!

As if Media Blasters hasn't been in our headlines enough lately what with the whole Zetsubou license, Zetsubou dub, no Zetsubou dub thing, the company has now confirmed to ANN that they've picked up the license to Record of Lodoss War, both the OVA and TV series. (The original rumor came from a Central Park Media fanblog.)

Since most of you guys are, I believe, younger than me, many of you may not be familiar with the 1990s high-fantasy anime. The series actually was created not as novels but as "replays," or transcript of tabletop RPG sessions. Yes: the franchise is based on the adventures created by a D&D group. (It's not that weird; I think the entire Dragonlance franchise started that way too.)

The series has since spawned a bunch of different manga series, as well as a 13-episode OVA in 1990 and a TV anime in 1998, both of which will be released by Media Blasters in at some point (no release schedule is available). Both of the titles were originally released by Central Park Media. Media Blasters also picked up Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend, the infamous tentacle hentai also formerly licensed by Central Park Media.

I couldn't tell you which I'm more excited for!

I remember buying the boxed set of the Lodoss War OAV series subtitled on VHS back in the day. Damn, I feel old now. .. Get off my lawn you darned kids!

if they release a bundled complete series with the oav I am all about plunking down the money for this. I used to watch ROLW Chronicles of the heroic knight on toonami jetstream on a dial up modem the english audio made the horrible stream semi watchable, oh..... and it needs to include all welcome to Lodoss islands.  For those interested in the series Legend of Crystiania I believe is set in the same universe.

I'd appreciate it if you gave credit to the person that broke the story here and then the person that confirmed it, rather than giving ANN all of the credit, since they didn't do anything.  Nothing bothers me more than to see people that go out and dig up stories go unrecognized because a larger organization jumps on it.

@yuetheguardian:  Yeah, but those Legend of Crystania movies are awful.  They are in the same universe, but are based on totally different characters (with the exception of Ashram, who is not even the same character anymore; oh, and Pirotess, who kinda runs around a bit connecting everything together).  They actually take place on the beast-god island (Crystania) to the north of Lodoss Island.

I already own both series on DVD, so the news doesn't mean much to me personally, but I'm really happy that a new generation of fans will be able to see them.

@HSaabedra: In this event you're probably right that I should have linked to ANN's original source as well, and I'll make the edit-- but as for the confirmation you linked to, I never stumbled upon Bryant's article until you posted the URL, and I'm sure ANN is being honest when they say they went to Media Blasters to confirm without citing Bryant as a source as well, so they certainly did the same homework that he did to get the confirmation.

So wouldn't it be kind of dishonest of me to not cite ANN-- the source I actually got the news from --in favor of explicitly trying to find someone else to source (which is the only way I would have turned up his link, barring someone fortuitously sending it to me while I was writing the article)? I know it seems unfair since ANN is the bigger site, but that doesn't mean I should be any less truthful about them as my source, either.

Believe me, I've been the victim of...'judicious' source-linking before, so I can relate to what you're talking about, but that just makes me try to be all the more honest about where I actually get my stuff from, whether it's one of the big boys or a tiny unknown blog I stumbled upon in a google alert (or a cool site someone sends me a tip to) ;)
HSaabedraon Feb. 19, 2010 at 5:01 p.m.
@gia: It was my bias talking and I should have measured my words more carefully, but like you, I've also been the victim of such sourcing shenanigans which is why I said what I did :) .  Anyone that jumps into this doesn't deserve to go unrecognized and become demoralized if they make the effort to go out and find stories.

@HSaabedra: True enough! And I've added OtakuReview back into my GoogleReader (I'm not exactly sure why they weren't there to begin with). :)

@gia:
Cool. :) Just to close out the discussion, I've had articles I've written for my anchor site scraped by BusinessWeek, the AP and other bigger mobile/gadget blogs without attribution or credit, so I hope that puts my feelings into better context.  Nothing like seeing your best work being ripped off and losing money because of it. Its a feeling I don't wish on anyone, especially when they're just starting out.

Thank you freaking god! I've been calling for Lodoss to be re-released ever since I reviewed it at Bureau42.

@HSaabedra: I'll make sure to reference the correct site when mentioning this on Bureau42. Thank you for pointing out who got the story first.

EDIT: Now we just need to get the Patlabor OVAs and TV series re-licenced...

I like Record of lodoss of War Ova's allot.  The TV show not so much.  The one thing I did about the TV show was the chibi shorts they had of the charaters at the end of the show.

I like Record of lodoss of War OVA's in that it's like you said D&D feel to it.  Most anime don't do shows like this anymore.  Unless it's a Hentai.
