As if Media Blasters hasn't been in our headlines enough lately what with the whole Zetsubou license, Zetsubou dub, no Zetsubou dub thing, the company has now confirmed to ANN that they've picked up the license to Record of Lodoss War, both the OVA and TV series. (The original rumor came from a Central Park Media fanblog.)
Since most of you guys are, I believe, younger than me, many of you may not be familiar with the 1990s high-fantasy anime. The series actually was created not as novels but as "replays," or transcript of tabletop RPG sessions. Yes: the franchise is based on the adventures created by a D&D group. (It's not that weird; I think the entire Dragonlance franchise started that way too.)
The series has since spawned a bunch of different manga series, as well as a 13-episode OVA in 1990 and a TV anime in 1998, both of which will be released by Media Blasters in at some point (no release schedule is available). Both of the titles were originally released by Central Park Media. Media Blasters also picked up Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend, the infamous tentacle hentai also formerly licensed by Central Park Media.
I couldn't tell you which I'm more excited for!

if they release a bundled complete series with the oav I am all about plunking down the money for this. I used to watch ROLW Chronicles of the heroic knight on toonami jetstream on a dial up modem the english audio made the horrible stream semi watchable, oh..... and it needs to include all welcome to Lodoss islands. For those interested in the series Legend of Crystiania I believe is set in the same universe.
I already own both series on DVD, so the news doesn't mean much to me personally, but I'm really happy that a new generation of fans will be able to see them.
So wouldn't it be kind of dishonest of me to not cite ANN-- the source I actually got the news from --in favor of explicitly trying to find someone else to source (which is the only way I would have turned up his link, barring someone fortuitously sending it to me while I was writing the article)? I know it seems unfair since ANN is the bigger site, but that doesn't mean I should be any less truthful about them as my source, either.
Believe me, I've been the victim of...'judicious' source-linking before, so I can relate to what you're talking about, but that just makes me try to be all the more honest about where I actually get my stuff from, whether it's one of the big boys or a tiny unknown blog I stumbled upon in a google alert (or a cool site someone sends me a tip to) ;)
Cool. :) Just to close out the discussion, I've had articles I've written for my anchor site scraped by BusinessWeek, the AP and other bigger mobile/gadget blogs without attribution or credit, so I hope that puts my feelings into better context. Nothing like seeing your best work being ripped off and losing money because of it. Its a feeling I don't wish on anyone, especially when they're just starting out.
@HSaabedra: I'll make sure to reference the correct site when mentioning this on Bureau42. Thank you for pointing out who got the story first.

EDIT: Now we just need to get the Patlabor OVAs and TV series re-licenced...
I like Record of lodoss of War Ova's allot. The TV show not so much. The one thing I did about the TV show was the chibi shorts they had of the charaters at the end of the show.
I like Record of lodoss of War OVA's in that it's like you said D&D feel to it. Most anime don't do shows like this anymore. Unless it's a Hentai.
