Marvelous Entertainment Seeks Volunteer Retirees

Sad news, but not as bad as it could be.

She's thinking of retiring.
She's thinking of retiring.
It's been a while since we saw signs of economic downturn from one of the Japanese studios-- I think since the last piece of news on Gonzo layoffs last month. The latest, however, comes from anime!anime!: Marvelous Entertainment is starting a voluntary retirement program in hopes of preempting the need to lay people off.

Marvelous Entertainment is behind a lot of different forms of entertainment, primarily video games, music, and anime-- titles include Gunslinger Girls, Katekyo Hitman Reborn!, and Mushishi. They'll be taking applications for early retirement from today through April 3, hoping to get at least 20 volunteers-- about 17% of the company's 120-employee force.

On the one hand, this means they need to save money on employee salaries-- but on the other hand, it means that they don't need it so badly that they're jumping straight to layoffs, especially since (as with most volunteer retiree programs) they're offering financial incentives.
