Manga at the Eisners: 2010 is Lookin' Good

Manga racks up 7 noms-- outside of the "Best US Edition of Foreign Material - Asia" category.

The Eisners-- the American comics world's Oscars --have just announced their nominations for 2010, and it's looking pretty good compared to last year. In 2009, manga-related works were nominated in five categories, including "Best U.S. Edition of Foreign Material - Japan," which might as well have been called "Best Manga."

This year that category has been broadened to "Best U.S. Edition of Foreign Material - Asia" and includes a nominee from South Korea, Kim Dong Hwa. (Whose name is, I believe, typo'd in the release, tragically.)

The nominees for this category are:

Urasawa's name popped up a lot-- 20th Century Boys is also up for Best Ongoing Series (he was nominated in the same category last year for Monster). Pluto earned a nom for Best Limited Series/Story Arc, which is a new category for manga to break into, I believe. He also got a nod for Best Writer/Artist, which thrills me beyond words.

Other nominations relevant to our interests:
  • Yoshihiro Tatsumi's A Drifting Life for Best Reality-Based Work
  • Jiro Taniguchi's A Distant Neighborhood for Best Graphic Album
  • Helen McCarthy's The Art of Osamu Tezuka: God of Manga for Best Comics-Related Book
  • Eric P. Nash's Manga Kamishibai for Best Comics-Related Book

Whew. A big year for manga at the Eisners-- and the winners will be announced at this year's Comic-Con International. I really hope Urasawa takes home best writer/artist...how about you? (Especially those of you more familiar with American comics than I am!)

Hm...I don't know much about the other writer/artist nominees. Terry Moore's pretty good...but I don't think Echo is all that great. I guess we'll see.
