Mamoru "Light" Miyano Joins Planzet Movie Cast

A big name for what should be a big movie. Well, maybe.

A new CG anime film titled Planzet is set to open this year in Japan, and it's somewhat anticipated due to its pedigree: it's being directed by Jun Awazu, who has made a career for about 10 years of doing CG animation for a wide variety of films, both anime (like Zoids Shinseiki/Zero) and live-action (Kamen Rider 555), as well as some games (2002's Shinobi). His last directorial credit, however, was a tokusatsu film called Negadon: The Monster from Mars, which featured many references to earlier Japanese films.

Independence Day?
Independence Day?
But Planzet is going to be set in the year 2053, and unsurprisingly, all of humanity will be facing some kind of crisis. Based on the trailer at its official site, it looks kinda like Independence Day, but with mechs. So far!

Today anime!anime! reports that Mamoru Miyano, best known for playing leads such as Death Note's Light Yagami, Gundam 00's Setsuna F. Seiei, and Ouran High School Host Club's Tamaki, will be playing the protagonist in Planzet, whose name is Taishi Akashima.

Joining him as his little sister Koyomi is Happy! Style member Kaori Ishihara in what looks to be her first voice-acting role ever, which should be interesting.

All in all, looks like it could be a cool film. Check out the trailer and tell me what you think.

Wow... this actually looks to have some potential and be interesting...

Hm, I wanted to see more face animation. That second where the bearded guy moved wasn't enough for me to determine wether it sucked or not.

Actually, what little movement you could see looked kinda choppy, like the robot hand readying the gun, though that might be intentional, it was a robot after all.

@RockmanBionics: Yeah, faces and people in general are kinda what can make or break a CG movie that appears to be aiming for mostly realism like this (as opposed to, say, a Pixar film, where everyone is highly stylized). Actually even Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within suffered from that a bit. It worked out okay in Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, though.

Color me interested. I love these post apocalyptic-wasteland things.

@John_Martone: You want a Fallout CG movie, admit it.
