Makoto Tateno Returns to the US for Yaoi-Con

Makoto Tateno, creator of many popular yaoi series like Yellow and Hero Heel, will be attending her first-ever Yaoi-Con-- but not her first American convention; she was at Otakon in 2006. She'll be here to promote Digital Manga Publishing's release of the manga Yellow in omnibus format (two volumes with about 385 pages each, $19.95).

Tateno is joining Yaoi-Con's guest of honor Minami Haruka, and the combo will be awesome. Yes, I'll be in attendance this year, since it's not overlapping with NYAF this time and it's in my home digs. Hopefully I'll drag one of the Whiskey boys with me and document their horror. It'll be great times! If they ever post their press information so I can register, anyway...

Actually, that brings me to a good question. I know what to cover at Yaoi-Con for the yaoi fans, but admit it-- even those of you who are horrified of yaoi are kind of interested in what goes on at Yaoi-Con, the world's only convention filled to the brim with almost nothing but hormonal females (the male-to-female ratio at most anime cons is about 1:1, but at Yaoi-Con it's closer to like....well, I'd estimate between 1:5 and 1:10.)

What kinds of things do you want to see there? I'm hoping I get a chance to film the Bishounen Auction, and I'll hit the few industry panels for news from the yaoi pubs. But what else should I focus on? The female attendees making out? Artist's alley (it's not ALL yaoi in there)? Cosplay photos? Share your thoughts, por favor!

I'm so glad you're going!!!  Last year there was no news from there and I was dying for industry news.  It didn't seem like there were many industry panels though.  So if people like BLU and Kitty don't have them, please hunt them down, tie them up, and threaten to call in the screaming girls with paddles unless they tell you what they're going to be releasing (like The Crimson Spell 3, which they've said they'll be releasing but not when).

I'm also curious to know if any of them are planning on changing any licensing strategies based upon the Handley case and others that focus on minor characters in manga.

Other than that, I'd be curious about the large influx of Western novel writers selling their m/m romances and erotica.  It seemed like they'd almost taken over the dealer room last year.  Is yaoicon becoming less about the yaoi (Japanese version) and more about m/m writing in general?   And do those writers have any concept of yaoi and what it represents and why we love it?   I often get the feeling they look down upon it as childish and backwards, when basically it's just not to their tastes (and they don't seem to 'get' the tropes).  I'd love to know if any of them try to incorporate any characteristics of yaoi into their works (like the light-heartedness and fun fantasy aspect), or if they're just writing from a slash lit background which tends to focus a lot on reality and angst and gay issues, which aren't what I want from BL.

Oh, and a helpful hint:
