Maid-sama! First Look and Staff

Mmm, delicious new shoujo anime.

It came out in August that Kaichou wa Maid-sama!, a Hakusensha manga which TOKYOPOP has been publishing in English, would be getting an anime adaptation. Now the first image of the anime has hit the 'net-- along with a few names on the staff! ( Via 2ch.)

The anime will be directed by Hiroaki Sakurai, who is best known for helming a lot of Di Gi Charat stuff, along with Cromartie High School, so expect him to be able to capture plenty of the humor. Character design will be by Yuki Imoto, who did animation direction on the fantastic Ghost Hunt and key animation on Honey and Clover the first and second.

Finally, the animation studio behind the series will unfortunately not be BONES, who did an amazing job with Maid-sama!'s Hakusensha compatriot Ouran High School Host Club, but it will be J.C. Staff, the solid studio behind Zero no Tsukaima, Hayate the Combat Butler, Nodame Cantabile, etc.

I'm really looking forward to this one, how about you guys?

J.C.Staff could be hit or miss, though usually they do pretty good so I'm not too worried ( <-- Is actually happily anticipating this series)

Glad everyone's excited. The manga is very fun-- sort of the best parts of Host Club mixed with the best parts of Special A --and I definitely recommend picking up a volume before the anime starts running. Whenever that is. (I'm hoping for a January release, but that'd be pretty fast, and it feels like more of a spring show to me, so I'd bank on an April start.)

ok, I'm in.

Hmm...honestly, I dig the series, but a lot of people don't really understand the satire and demonize it as the pinnacle of 'Japanese misogyny.' I can see an anime release really getting up a lot of uptight butts.

@Monkeynohito: I dunno, I didn't hear a lot about that with Special A, which is all about a girl who kind of learns to be okay with always being in "second place" to the guy who becomes her boyfriend. Or in Vampire Knight, where Yuki is eternally being protected, rescued, kidnapped, etc. @_@;

@OneGreatTurtle:
Sorry to hear that! Hit up the Borders and B&N websites to do local searches. You could also try ordering off of Amazon or Powell's and probably get a better price, too :)

@gia: Good point; I was just thinking the maid outfits would ruffle some feathers from the onset. The covers do kinda stick out amongst a pile of high school books and I always worry Host Club will start popping monocles into champagne glasses any day now.

As an aside, is that second place angle played straight in Special A or is it more tongue-in-cheek like Maid-sama? Hearing about that kinda turned me off to checking the series out.
giaon Oct. 26, 2009 at 8:41 p.m.
@Monkeynohito: Mmm...I wouldn't say it's tongue-in-cheek, it's very important to the lead heroine that she continues to try to beat the guy and do her best at whatever she's doing. It might have been unfair to say that she learned to be okay with it, since she still does struggle to overcome, but she's also kind of decided that if she's going to be in second place, she doesn't mind it so much if she's next to him, as it were.

But to date, she has still never beat him, so...it's kinda up to you.
