Magicians on Rape Games and Thought Crimes

Penn of Penn & Teller speaks out against banning Japanese rape games.

You may remember I reported earlier about Rapelay and other rape games getting banned in Japan, and apparently Penn-- of the famous Penn and Teller comedy/magic show –agrees with my assessment that such a ban is bad.

He brings up a different point from mine, which was that banning these games doesn't change anything anyway, but a point I've made in other contexts (including discussions about banning explicit lolicon): if there is no  harm to anyone in its creation, and there is no proof or even solid evidence that its consumption will lead directly to harm, then it should not be censored. Doing so is only an attempt at banning a particular state of mind.

It's not illegal to be a pedophile, nor is it illegal to want to rape someone. It is illegal to act on either of those inclinations, but to try and ban material that caters to those fantasies without causing direct harm to others is, in essence, trying to ban having that fantasy. In other words, it's basically punishing a “thought crime.”

But if my saying so isn't enough for you, perhaps Penn saying so is. So here he goes:

Love Penn. Bullshit is one of my favorite shows, it's good to know he thinks this way outside the show as well as on.

Hes right - but he's got to realize that the world is about to become One...

Things are about to get worse folks, your dealing with altruistic organizations, talking to Phycopathic Governments...

All i hear is dislocation... No jobs, running out of money and crazy men with bombs just miles away...what is more important?

He is good.

YAAAAAYY!!!! Kuro you just made my day.

Also, Penn makes a very agreeable argument. I give him two jumping out of hospital windows thumbs up!
Void_Wizardon May 29, 2009 at 6:34 a.m.
I definitely agree with Penn.
Lanon May 29, 2009 at 11:59 a.m.
Well put Penn. You can't condemn something because you think it's going to make someone do something. People act of their own accord not because a game/book/other form of media made them.

If Penn asked me to, I would have sex with his intellect.

Amen Penn!!XD

Well said... If I could be punished for all the things I THOUGHT of doing to people.... well I'd be serving 1,000 consecutive life sentances JUST for the horrible unspeakable acts of violence the sound of Billy May's voice suddenly coming from my TV makes me want to commit. I want to slaughter a path from my house all the way to his and rip the hairs out of his beard with a Doberman.

Woot, Sound right to me.

The documentary Manga Mad goes into this very subject, it's up on iTunes if anyone cares to check it out (though I'm sure most AV members have already seen it).  I'd put in my 2 cents on the subject but it's in line with Penn and all the above comments who've already stated it well enough....Octocock!!

"Thought crimes" Oh my... 1984 reference? Great book. Well even if it wasn't in reference to that novel, I still like Penn's rationality in this video. Kudos to him.
