Anime Vice News

How did such a promising shonen series run off the rails so quickly? When did these Arabian knights jump the shark?

I've always pronounced it Mah-gee rather than May-geye, don't hurt me!

I watched about 14 episodes and haven't picked the show back up in, I don't know, weeks? Months? You're definitely not wrong in this review Tom. The show just lost the magic it had in the beginning that made it so interesting and promising. The setting is so different to what we usually get in shounen anime.

Maybe the problem was the episode count. I haven't read the manga, so I don't know if they padded out the latter episodes with filler or not, but it might have been better served as a 12 or 13 episode series rather than stretching it out over 25.

Yeah, there is a second season coming. Should start some time in October, I think. It might be worth checking out the first couple of episodes to see if they can recapture the magic.

An yet its getn a second season this fall. The second season will be set in Magnostadt./sigh

I have to wonder was behind the sceens some one changed out like a writer .That an or they didnt excpect it to last the 1st 12 episodes an was cought flat footed.Still have yet to finish the 1st season.Its like i really dont want to watch the last 3 episodes. im that disapointed in the series.

An its not the it didnt go where i wanted it to go problem. It's the what the hell did they do problem. Did some one not feed the ghost writer an they left? It really does feel that off.Like Tom says 1st 7 or 8 episodes are fast an soild. Well worth the time to watch.After that .. ehh.When great falls to just average at best The fall just seems from a greater hight doesnt it?

I have to agree with this video review an summery.Not hard at all actualy probly nicer to the show than most would be.Its just surprising its geting a second season.Of the three main characters i liked Morgiana even after they gave her ghost rider firey chains . Aladdin could be a fun character but Alibaba Saluja became a sub par character.Once he turned into a emotinal wussy show headed down hill.

@Marshal Victory:

Believe in Magi. I'm still hoping they do something right in this season. They probably rush the pirate arc to get to Magnostadt or hell, they skip it.

Marshal Victoryon July 16, 2013 at 7:01 p.m.

@takashichea: Probly will try it again .This summer season is fairly thin for me so ill try to watch older stuff an cach up on this at some point.Its just like Tom said about character just shwoing up an your not invested in them. If Magi turns into Seven brides for Seven brothers all sunden charactera aplenty ill probly stop .

As it stands now i have not watched the last 3 episodes. So up to that point i hate to say it would not be a dvd buy for me even.But diviation of thought does keep things from being bland.When i say tho the show had alot of promis i ment it. An when i say it became a great let down, its not because the show did not go where i wanted it to go. It just didnt entertain me at the end to keep me wanting to watch.

Really hopen the second season gets better. But we would have to see that A game of season 1 early on to keep things intresting.Not unheard of in anime . Possible but not probable.

For Morgiana, she was actually Alibaba's slave in the original tales from what I read on Wikipedia. I never read the actual tales myself. It's interesting to see her as a character who is against the injustice in slavery in the anime.

I pretty much agree with the character creation. The anime had made Alibaba a bit more whiny like Marshal had pointed out. Both mediums focus so much on Alibaba. Aladdin hasn't really grown much as a character during those arcs. It's like Zombie Powder where the first main character gets overshadowed by the Deuteragonist.

@Marshal Victory:

The show probably isn't for you. There will be more characters. I used to work at the Magi Wikia community. I stopped after completing my role, writing episode summaries. I seen a lot of characters from the Kou Empire and other countries from the manga. There are like 177 chapters. We're on chapter 115 where the anime has left. The anime had covered over 100 chapters in 25 episodes. It's pretty insane.

I don't read the manga after the anime. I like to read with them in equal pacing. Plus, Ohtaka is not going cover these characters in depth since she published the Sinbad prequel manga story. Chances are that you're going to be bombarded with tons of characters in the second season.

There are no filler episodes in the first season. Magi just had this weird pacing. It was fast in the beginning then it slowed down in the Balbadd arc. Then, it speed up again during the Zagan arc at the end. It had an anime exclusive ending. It wasn't executed well.

I pronounce magi differently from how both Tom and the show do, but Tom's definition is actually correct. So now, whenever, I don't know, Gift of the Magi comes up, I'll change my tune.

Well, the site went wonky just as I was submitting what I thought about the season. Instead of trying to recreate what I wrote, here are some points

1. Morgiana was awesome, and she needed more screen time

2. Sinbad? Great character. Why do we need all of his superfluous friends hanging around

3. The season and the big bad seemed to be wrapped up too sloppily. It felt like the team didn't even know if the show was comign back for season 2, so they had to come up with something satisfying. Meh.

4. I liked Alladin and Ali Baba, but I miss his headless Djinn buddy, and I kinda wish the original creator stuck with making Alladin a female. Just do it for the sake of change.

I try to imagine Aladdin as a chick. It didn't work out. Aladdin is a big pervert. He enjoys going out with Alibaba to these pubs to check out the ladies. From my wikia friends at Magi Wikia, they told all sorts of fun stuff with Aladdin at the pubs. They always push me to read the manga past the anime. I wish they redo Morgiana's dancing scene. The theme song did it right.

From what I heard, Ugo doesn't appear over a 100 chapters or so, only flashbacks.

Dig Deeper into Magi - The Labyrinth of Magic

The story revolves around Aladdin who finds a Djinn. It follows his journey with a group of friends he found, Ugo and Morgianna.
