MAGI #6 - - Watch & Learn

Meet your new biggest anime ass-kicker.

This show’s puzzling inclusion of a made-up “dark continent” may be another FMA-style case where the sub team really should’ve placed their desire for a direct translation beneath some better sensitivity to the historical implications of certain terms… but, all the same, Morgiana has proven to be one serious stand-out character.

Her name might not seem appropriate to the locale, at all, but I’m quite impressed by how quickly the show’s given such dimension and depth to her; all while still managing to make her look quite credible as an ass-kicker. And yeah, I know… this is all about flights of fancy and wish fulfillment at the end of the day, but I do appreciate it when a show puts in effort to work some brutal technique into the action that makes the sight of a 90 lbs girl beating the shit out of men twice her size at least a little easier to believe.

On more high-minded matters, it turns out that many of you lunatics really weren’t kidding when you said that the show actually does tackle the subject of slavery rather cannily. I do remember being a little puzzled when Morgiana didn’t immediately try to revolt against her master in the earlier episodes. Sure, it was conceivable that’d she been in chains long enough that she was conditioned to become reliant on them… but I honestly wasn’t expecting such psychological depth from a shonen series.

Well, here we are, and the joke’s on me. They actually are plumbing those depths of personality and showing how Morgiana’s spirit has been broken in certain areas for all of these years (even as she’s been able to accomplish such amazing acts of bravery). We’re not all courageous in every aspect of our lives; and that’s complication that you really don’t see in a lot of these character profiles.

With each passing episode, I feel more silly for being so dismissive about this show at the beginning. It’s been one of the real surprises of the season.

Watch this episode, "Fanalis, the Warrior Tribe" here and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode here.

Yeah, this show is a lot more serious than I would've imagined, especially since Aladdin would love nothing more than to bury his chibi face in oppai.

The series has an innocent, shonen charm to it with chibi and fan service. However, it can be quite dark which I enjoyed it. This is a cool episode that feature Morgiana.

If you had questions what happened between Aladdin, Sahsa, and Leila, the anime skipped their story. You have to read chapter 1. Magi is coming to the US in August.

Awesome, you're hooked on Magi. Yeah, the oppai scene will happen again with Aladdin. Though, he won't get away with it.

She is actualy my favorite characteters in the series. An ya the tone of the show goes to every depth rarely seen in shonen. Also um i dont know who these "lunatics" are .Just half crazy here ,dont know much of the lunatics but they seem to be reasonable sort.

By the way it was predicted some unreasonable sort would issue fatwas because of some parts of this anime. Not heard of this .. yet.But reguards to "the dark continent" bit used to be used in fantasy novels not historical in nature.Noting historical about this anime so really it should not be a problem.
