MADOKA MAGICA #10 - - - Watch & Learn

Magical Girls reap their revenge on pervs!

Before I congratulate myself for yet another correct prediction, I think it’s probably more pertinent to follow-up on the last point we discussed in our Vice Pit episode on this show. I haven’t ever pretended to be a devotee of Magical Girl but, extrapolating from my experience with tricky shows like VAMPIRE BUND, I’m sure that excessive sexualizing (say that three times fast) happens enough in the genre that the subject’s a real "elephant in the room” for any deconstruction. As such, I can’t help but wonder if the design of the first witch that the assembled team battles in this episode might actually be some sly comment on the threat of such… ribald material in this type of story.

Think about it - - the girls are getting attacked by clotheslines festooned with schoolgirls’ outfits. The things are slashing at them like tentacles, and they’re snaking up to a giant plaid skirt up in the sky that has no body to speak off, but a half-dozen, very sinister arms poking out of it. I imagine the nightmares of a subway groper with a collection of upskirt pics on his phone couldn’t be too different from this.

No, I don’t think there’s anything more to it. However, this was clearly made by people who know this genre frontwards and back, so I’m sure they couldn’t resist an opportunity to put in such an abstract and grotesque parody for those savy enough to catch it.

Again, knowing as little about Magical Girl as I do, I’d also be curious about how often time-travel’s used in the genre - - because that brings me to my next point of self-congratulation. Yep, I was right. Homura older than she appears (although this explanation’s far more interesting than my initial hypothesis about her being immortal). I never get to re-watch older episodes for anything I cover in W&L, but I'd really, really like to go back and see how much more resonance the various teases in the first episode's Apocalyptic visions carry if you know the full meaning of what's been going on.

And I'm out of space, once more. There's way too much to discuss in this show! I love it!

Watch this episode, "I Won't Rely On Anyone, Anymore" here and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode here.

I feel like you should be talking about the differences between Homura from the past to what she became, as well as how her time travel kept making things worst, and how the other girls reacted to being turned in to witches, than about trickiness in shows.

Speaking of Vampire Bund, Madoka Magica was made by the same company SHAFT and they are know to get away with a lot of things and still making it either funny, interesting, or just fly right over your head. Plus they are know to do little to there animation and do great work with just pure art style.

Sigh...so the trickness defenders are out all ready in the comments? Yeah I missed this but agree with you that it was put in deliberately. Good catch. Really not sure if you can say she is older than she appears as do you really age if you are just repeating the same month? This is also the first time we really get to see modoka as a magical girl and it is quite interesting isn't it?

Time travel was used in sailor moon but I am not sure how much it is used in other shows.

I would find a way to go back and rewatch as this show deserves all the talk time you can give it. Glad you are enjoying the show it is definitely one of my favorites.

@zaldar: I do not see the defenders that you speak of, unless comments have been deleted.
zaldaron Nov. 30, 2012 at 4:41 p.m.

@Turambar: saying it should not be discussed is tantamount to defending it at least on anime vice.

I don't see anyone saying that either.  Also, why exactly does AV dance around this supposedly major issue with dumb terms like  "tricky"?  If you think its pedophilia, just call it that already.

Homura easily got on my top anime character list after this episode. Her determination and grizzled attitude towards the whole situation made her a boss. I especially like how she compensated for her lack of skill by using the guns and explosives. Her character comes together very well here.

Time travel works differently depending on what series you are talking about. I believe Homura's power is rewinding and stopping time (instead of travel) which means everything reverts back to where it was before, including age. The only part that is off is that Homura gets to keep her memory of it all. This means that she can get lots of memories without aging. I can't really argue about it though because the writer can decide what they want.

Destinyheroknighton Nov. 30, 2012 at 6:21 p.m.

Why can't we just say Loli

Anyway, I think Homura is the same age since she only repeating the same days over and over.

But I like what Looper say of the matter of time traveling :)

Now, for the witch name Patricia, I have no idea what meaning of her and I look in the Guidebook. (only got the name)

So you might be right LOL!

If you see this Tom, I'm extremely curious to know how you would compare this to Samurai 7, which from the way you described in your 4-part finale watch and learn review, it sounded like your favorite anime show yet.

Because the term's a reference to the Yellow Dyno video on Everything is Terrible and using it to belittle these "tropes" amuses the hell out of me.

VAMPIRE BUND actually was very funny, even though it made me very uncomfortable. It almost like the studio had been assigned some dirty work and chose to make it as ridiculous as they could to make it bearable.

Yeah exactly. You're not sure how many times she's done this time period over. The number of repeated days could add up to years.

Of course I'm right! Haha. (BTW - - I missed LOOPER in theaters. Totally need to see when it comes to DVD)

S7 wasn't my favorite, per se. It was just very satisfying to watch an adventure series that actually satisfied the basics after I'd watch a number of series that were much more obfuscating about setting conflicts with any sort of payoff. The two shows are very much apples and oranges.

Re-watch episode 1 and pay attention to Homura's expressions! This is definitely a show worth re-watching at least once after finishing the first 10 episodes.

Elfenlied1012on Dec. 2, 2012 at 11:04 a.m.

@Lurkero: actually judging from from the post credits stuff at the end of the show being the post apocalyptic stuff with homura the same age I don't think magical girls in this universe age, since the body is that of a undead sort of being.
