LUPIN III: THE WOMAN CALLED FUJIKO MINE #2 -- Watch & Learn

Eroticism personified.

If you haven’t surmised already, I’ve made my picks of the shows I’ll be watching now I’m done with this latest, shorter sampling period. It’s going to be this show, EUREKA SEVEN AO, SPACE BROTHERS and then also a resumption of YU YU HAKUSHO for the final stretch to the end of “the Dark Tournament.” Keep in mind, that slate’s subject to change after I finally catch up with these series. Part of the reason I usually pick old shows for this column is that there are never any problems about waiting for a new episode.

Some of you lunatics have derided the animation in this show as being sloppy. While I’m normally not a fan of attempts to integrate CG models with 2D characters (and, for the record, the elements don’t integrate especially well here,) I’m so taken with the style here that it’s easy for me to look past all that stuff. Certainly, it’s an acquired taste, but for me, there’s a palpable sense of vitality to the art that comes with all the scratchy lines. It’s like seeing the pages of an especially-inspired artist’s sketchpad coming straight to life without any of the usual go-betweens.

I’m not deeply versed in the mythos of LUPIN III - - perhaps I’m an orange belt in terms of understanding - - so this might actually truer to the source material than I’m aware. However, it’s worth saying that this feels like one of those “alternative perspective” takes on classic stories that you see from time to time. You know, like MARY REILLY or that book that retold Beowulf from the perspective of Grendel. I suspect that Fujiko didn’t meet the players in Lupin’s gang before that gang actually, because the telling of their meeting here feels like a provocative spin on it.

Could one of you more learned lunatics in the community enlighten me here?

I'm assuming you liked this episode? The origin story's been retconned a few times already, so don't worry about how well it fits into the "canon" of Lupin III. I just enjoyed it for being a good episode, showing how Jigen and Fujiko were playing with both mafia families for their own reasons.

I don't care what people think of this art style, I really enjoy it.

I'm not sure about the fine details of the original manga. From what I've been hearing, this series is closer to the mature feel of the stories. That manga was a seinen series with lots of sex and gun fights.

There are a lot more anime going on that are recently streaming. I recently started watching DUSK MAIDEN OF AMNESIA on The Anime Network. That's a lot of fun, so far.

I remember watching the old series back on UTB until Case Closed took over. Not that I hate Case Closed. I want both shows on that channel. I didn't know Lupin III had other series.

Tom, you are not done sampling the new series when we got a sleeper hit called Mysterious Girlfriend X but you can check it out when you get the time as well as finish the series you just started.

As for this Lupin series, it style is both interestingly cool but also little off when the designs of characters look a little off.

Hey, if you're sampling new shows, don't forget Sket Dance!

I need to watch this show to see how Goemon looks like.

@metalsnakezero: I know right? Can you believe Mysterious Girlfriend X is being directed by the same guy that's directing Space Brothers (Ayumu Watanabe).

Tom please do not watch this unless you are writing an ironic article or ZombiePie drunkblog. It isn't worth it.

@DocHaus: Dude, it's totally worth watching. Or at least a first look at it.

This is the episode that sold me on he show. It was dark, violent, devoid of comedy, and ended on a somber note. I hope the rest of the episodes are more like this one than the first.

@metalsnakezero:

i like Mysterious Girlfriend X alot. Its weird an the art style is great. That said this season had many a good to great series. Dusk Maiden of Amnesia an Jormungand fit right up their to .But Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine is just a different animal.

Just on story an oddness id recommend the other 3 .Just on animation quality (Jormungand being last but above average ) They all should get a watch at some time in the future.
