LUPIN III: THE WOMAN CALLED FUJIKO MINE #12 -- Special Review

Fujiko and Jason Bourne have something in common, huh?

Yes, it was kind of silly to stop following this show when I was only two episodes from the conclusion. I didn’t know that was the case at the time! Thankfully, it’s never too late in anime, so we’re back for a special look at this penultimate episode… and I’m kind of torn.

On the one hand, this episode had the best action and the most creative set-pieces of the entire series. And that says a lot, because there’s been a lot of innovation and finesse throughout. The whole freefall chase through the wooden roller coaster honestly had my head spinning. The reveal about how the “Court of Owls” hired Lupin to “steal” was a pretty brilliant retcon to explain their relationship - - especially how he refers to her as some precious valuable he must possess.

(You can see why he’d have such an obsessive fascination with her, especially in contrast to the now-jilted Jigen who’s soooooooo over her.)

On the other hand, though… just as it was funny to note the similarities the series had to the current BATMAN crossover, it’s now funny timing to see this coming out (more-or-less) around the release of the new BOURNE movie.

I can sympathize with the crew wanting to give Ms. Mine a more interesting back-story, but making her the product of a sort of Weapon X/Blackbriar project doesn't feel like it was the way to go. For one, it obviously draws way too many other origin stories to mind, so it doesn’t feel like an especially fresh surprise. Also, it feels a little "pop psychology" for her wicked ways to be shaped by child abuse. As Byzantine as the Owl cult is, it just seems like too easy of an answer.

Watch this episode, "The Woman Called Fujiko Mine (Part 1)" here and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode here.

Episode 13 will address one of your gripes so keep watching!

The last few episodes elevate the series for me.

All right! I'll have to take your word for it! Here's hoping Lupin and Fujiko leave happily ever after together!

I had the luxury of watching the last 3 episodes back to back. It was an intense ride, but it concludes well and left me wanting more... damn that Mine Fujiko is such a tease. ;)
