LUPIN III Live-Action Trailer -- What Did You Think?

Monkey Punch's creation comes to life faithfully?

A while back, some of you Anime Vicers voiced concern over some comments director Ryuhei Kitamura made whilst discussing the level of realism he’d shoot for in this live-action LUPIN III movie. Specifically, he mulled over changing Lupin’s stalwart comrade-at-arms, Goemon, because the sight of a samurai running around in modern Japan would be too much today.

Well… all that concern seems to be totally unfounded, now that the trailer's out.

Short of maybe cranking the color saturation up even farther, I can’t think of any way the live-action Lupin could look more like Monkey Punch’s creation. And I guess Kitamura must have abandoned his concerns about Goemon, because there he is - - a samurai wielding his katana on a speeding car.

This looks like a whole barrel of fun. Though, I do find it amusing that it'll be an origin story - - showing how Lupin inherited his 'master thief' title after his father’s murder, and subsequently formed his gang. THE WOMAN CALLED FUJIKO MINE only just wrapped up last year, and that was another extended look at how these characters came to be (albeit from an angle focused on Lupin’s lady, where everybody kept to the 60’s setting). There's no getting past a good origin, is there?

Hopefully, this will be coming stateside soon. What do you lunatics think of it? Does it shoot new life into Lupin's legacy? Or does it bring shame to his name?

Probably as close as were gona get. Some have pointed out um race is wrong in 3 of the 4 of Lupin's crew or some such. An how if it was the other way white washing would be screamed. But really it looks good. Lead actor playing Lupin is a star in Japan atm. Plus he lost like 18lbs while training for the role.

He has the mannerism down to. An that question / joke tint to his voice for the character thats spot on. Also Monkey Punch is quoted as saying after seeing the costume changes "Looks good. This is going to be quite a movie." So if hes happy about how things are headed no reason for fans to nit pick. Hell I would be happy when Hollywood gets this close to the look on comic book movies.

As in the ask Anime Vice question thread I still would love to know what made the Director change his sour tune. Pics are worth a thousand I am sorry's !

Great! I don't think Tadanobu Asano does fit for Zenigata's Role optically, but that's it.

But this movie will stir a lot of discussions as some people don't seem to be pleased with the all-Japanese cast. (By stating that Lupin III is French, Jigen Italian, etc...)

Although there already has been a live-action movie of Lupin III back in the 70's.

Looks like silly fun. A lot better than I expected it to be.

@ElHa: Yeah he needs to least pull that toper down a bit in the front. Also all those who complained about white washing before an say nothing of this should be kicked in the shins.Personally I allways have been for sticking to the source material. Not a fan of gender/ race swaps for pc reasons or just cause.

But this is a " movie world" an it seems more based off of than kinda sorta based off of like we normally see. As noted the director wanted to make Mission Impossible an this was gona be his as close as hes gona get moment. So he was gona strip Goemon traditional garb. Id say he got a ear or two full an that changed his mind. As all of these characters are loved in many countries. An Goemon is not a second string character an liked by the Japanese fans as much as Lupin.

Don't worry too much about whether this origin fits in to the canon or not. After all the character's been around since the Soviet Union was still around, and it's just being updated to reflect the times. I'm just curious if we're getting "hardass" Zenigata or "Inspector Gadget" style Zenigata in this movie.

If you're in the mood for more Koike-designed Lupin goodness though, there is another Lupin animated special coming out this season called Daisuke Jigen's Gravestone.

I'm so thrilled by this!

Dig Deeper into Lupin III

Created in 1967 by mangaka Monkey Punch, the wildly successful Lupin III features the "gentleman thief" Arsène Lupin III. Lupin III is the grandson of Arsène Lupin, the fictional lead character of Maurice Leblanc's French novel series, published in the early 20th century.
