Licensing Rumors A-Go-Go! Summer Wars, Xam'd, Ultraviolet

Some delicious possibilities this summer!

Twitterer JLSkun, of anime blog The Golden Waste, tweeted some interesting news recently that was caught by Nebs. Apparently his local MovieStop shop is listing a preorder for The Girl Who Leapt Through Time director Mamoru Hosoda's latest film, Summer Wars, with a release date in August. No distributor was listed, and JLSkun reported that it and the other preorders he spotted were all removed when he checked back later.  MYSTEEEEERIOUS!

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time was handled in North America by Bandai Entertainment; on the other hand Manga Entertainment has picked up Summer Wars for the UK, so we'll see who snatches it here later. (If you want my bet, I'd lean towards Manga, but on the other hand, BEI has worked with Manga Entertainment for titles like Gurren Lagann, so it could even be a combo thereof...assuming it's not some other company entirely!)

MovieStop, if you're curious, is apparently an offshoot from GameStop, but not a very common one-- there aren't any in California, for example.

Also listed are Xam'd: Lost Memories, a sci-fi anime which was simulcast in the US via the PSN, for August 10th-- 13 episodes on DVD for $49.98 or Blu-Ray for $99.98 --and the anime adaptation of the movie Ultraviolet, titled Ultraviolet 044, twelve episodes for $59.98 on DVD or $99.98 on Blu-Ray, due July 13th. These two both did have distributors listed: Sony.

Now,  the likelihood of Summer Wars being licensed is pretty much 100%, it's just a matter of when. And a summer release sounds about right, don't you think?    As for the rest of it, only time will tell!

How badly do you want to see Summer Wars?

MovieStop is currently in the concept store phase around the Northeast and North Central Texas area, I used to work for the company and worked a few times at the MovieStop in Arlington, TX not too far from my house.  As for the listings being pulled, that's standard operating procedure for preliminary listings.  The distributors usually send updates to the corporate office and they get pushed out.  Being that they were pulled very recently, it looks like the distributors realized they sent out listings a little too early.

I'll be seeing Summer Wars tomorrow morning. I'm really trying to dial down my excitement, since I'm a fan of Mamoru Hosoda's and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is one of my all-time faves. I think it's pretty likely that Manga/BEI will release this in North America. Although, BEI's troubles of late have me second guessing how of their involvement there will be this time around.

Just as 4Kids lost One Piece. I can only wish VIZ would lose Detective Conan so Del Rey could pick up the pieces the way FUNimation did for One Piece. That would be the licensing news of my dreams.

I actually think there was one of these near where i used to live. I wonder if they will go down with Gamestop

I want to see it real bad.
@FoxxFireArt:

Wow so that had nothing to do with the original article.

I'm interested in seeing Summer Wars, but Xam'd didn't seem too noteworthy. You know, minus it being on the US PSN before being broadcast in Japan.

Really? I'll check it out with the proper endorsement. But my entire outlook on anime is that most series need personal handshakes for endorsements, since there's just so many, and so many generic versions of the same stories.

@John_Martone: I'm sure a few more people on the IRC will vouch for it.

@Sigue: Done. But if this doesn't work you... Oh who am I kidding, I can't stay mad at you.
