If you were planning to be in Japan while the
LAWSON conbini chain was running an Evangelion promo campaign-- where the stores were redecorated with Eva swag and an iPhone app allowed users to place a 3D EVA-01 unit around Hakone, an area outside of Tokyo that inspired some of the locations in Evangelion --bad news: Lawson has
cancelled the event. Apparently the Evangelion fans who were crowding around Hakone, parking illegally and disturbing the local residents. However...
If you're sad about the 3D EVA unit, don't be: Lawson is going to be releasing
a different kind of 3D EVA unit: an EVA-01 figure. It looks a bit like a Revoltech; the figure is posable with a stand and comes witha half-dozen alternate hands, swords, guns, and even half a Ramiel that you can stomp on.
Since this is only available at Lawson I'm guessing that those of you who won't be in Japan for the campaign would have to get lucky on eBay, or you could just pick up
an actual EVA Revoltech for about $25 USD before shipping. And if you're lucky enough to be in Japan right now, this guy'll run you about the same-- ¥2400, about $25.50 USD.
...this isn't very spoilery: in the original series episode 19, after something bad happens in episode 18, Shinji goes nuts (actually growing a pair) and threatens to destroy half of Nerv HQ using Eva-01 as revenge on Gendo.
Rebuild of Eva 2.0 does something similar, except this time, for dramatic purposes, we see Eva-01 standing directly on top of the Nerv HQ pyramid when he does this.
so that display stand is actually the top of the Nerv HQ Pyramid (Eva-01 stomps on it with its foot, destroying Gendo's primary office, which was in the top of the pyramid...though no one was in it at the time)
