Kyoto Animation Continues to Confuse Me

The Melancholy of Anime Fans Everywhere...

"Check and mate, Harutards!" "..."
"Check and mate, Harutards!" "..."

Anime fans everywhere are bitter about The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya's second season, which has consisted almost entirely of repeats of the same episode (with minor changes), which appear to be going on for a full eight episodes, god help us all.

But now Moon Phase reports on the DVD release for the season, which consists of a series of discs priced at ¥6,930 (about $72.50 USD) and numbered...well, oddly:

  • 涼宮ハルヒの憂鬱 5.142857
  • 涼宮ハルヒの憂鬱 5.230769
  • 涼宮ハルヒの憂鬱 5.285714
  • 涼宮ハルヒの憂鬱 5.428571
  • 涼宮ハルヒの憂鬱 5.571428
  • 涼宮ハルヒの憂鬱 5.714285

So that's six, presumably two-episode-each discs-- but there's one more listed: 涼宮ハルヒの憂鬱 5.999999, which is priced at only ¥4,830 ($50.52 USD).  It's unclear if that last one will feature only one episode (making the second season 13 episodes), or if there's something else that makes it cheaper. Either way, I'm sure fans are not going to be excited about having to pay a full/regular price for eight nearly-but-not-quite identical episodes.

What do you guys think? Assuming that Bandai or someone picks up the second season, how do you want them to handle the DVD release? I'd lean towards a single season box set myself, but what do you think is fair price-wise?

I thought I had seen a copy of this with a first DVD with 1 episode as well, making a total of 14.

I think the theory behind the numbering is that the episodes on those discs took place between the 5th and 6th DVDs of Season 1.  If that's true...are there other arcs that would fall between those two discs other than endless eight?  Or is this a sign that we could, god forbid, get 13 episodes of endless eight?

After the first episode of S2, I was like "Sweet! More Haruhi awesomeness!"  Then came episode 2, and it felt kinda fillerish to me, but I still enjoyed it. Then when episode 3 came, I thought "Holy crap!"

We're now on episode 7, soon to be 8, and....  ARGH!!!!! END ALREADY! *head explodes from irritation"

I suspect that the monotony of near repetition is intended to have big pay off in a later episode.... kinda like those annoying sci-fi episodes where they're stuck in time, and then fianlly unstick. Not that I'll like it any more.

Unless S2 has the most amazing payoff ever, I don't even want Bandai to license it.

In Japan, maybe the otaku will buy the Endless 8 DVDs to show their devotion to Haruhi/Yuki/KyoAni. In America? Trying to sell us the same episode with minor variations 7+ times isn't going to fly. They could dub it, release it in a single season set and put the MSRP at $29.99, and I'm still not convinced it would sell in any quantity.

Better not to take the risk.
transgojoboton July 30, 2009 at 4:18 p.m.
Wow. Why do the Japanese otaku continue to allow KyoAni to get away with this kind of crap? I'm beginning to feel that this studio really, REALLY needs to get over themselves. If Bones, Madhouse or I.G pulled any of the kind of stunts KyoAni has so far, I'd have a damn fit.
Void_Wizardon July 30, 2009 at 5:51 p.m.
I HATE what KyoAni is doing with Haruhi. They shouldn't release any dvds of e8  'cause they won't get that much Haruhi fans are f*cking sick of it.

I bet that they do sometime crazy as to never air the solution of Endless Eight and only release it in that final DVD.
Pyroon July 30, 2009 at 9:06 p.m.
Well, I just watched episode 8....

$%#@ %$# $#@$! $%#^ &&$#!!!

Skip it.
That is all.

How is that crazy? I don't think anyone wants to see the solution of this arc. It definitely won't be worth seeing all these stupid repeat episodes when the answer is revealed.

Concerning Bandai's licensing it here, I have one message for you Bandai:

DON'T. WASTE. YOUR MONEY.

Just take the funds you had thought up till now you'd be putting towards Haruhi S2, and license something else cool instead, like...idk... Princess Lover or Bakemonogatari.
Kyonshiroon July 31, 2009 at 11:48 p.m.
I'm not giving up. Yes, I would boycott this DVD, and yes, I think THIS set of episodes should not be licensed, but I will still believe that....

Aang can save the world ! (oh sorry, wrong show)

But seriously: Bandai shouldn't license these eight episodes only, but I still ferverntly hope that the rest of the season makes up for this debacle.

@Heero: I'd rather the GAME was licensed. It was better. And Bakemonogatari.... I think Funi mgiht do that one better, but that's me.

I would like a single box set too. Although, I'm not sure if I'll be getting the second season on DVD. The Endless Eight arc is taking a big chunk out of the second season so it would be a waste to buy it if the season was, for example, fourteen episodes long.
Such a shame, this season had a lot of high hopes, too. :[
