Kodansha President Passes Away

Sawako Noma was known for her role as Executive President and publisher of the Shonen Jump magazine.

Kodansha, the largest publishing company in Japan, is suffering a loss. Sawako Noma, 24 year executive President of the company responsible for publishing numerous manga titles and Shonen Jump magazine issues, passed away today (Wed. March 30) due to heart failure at the age of 67.

Noma, fourth generation daughter of the original Kodansha founder, Seiji Noma, also served as executive producer of the Akira anime adaptation. Her son, Yoshi Nobu, vice president, was scheduled to take over the company as president next month. Now he will take on the job title as the fifth generation of this family lineage, just in time to close the company's English-language publishing branch, Kodonsha International, this April.

Our thoughts go to Sawako Noma's friends, family and company.

Damn. I had no idea the company was run by a family, so that's really cool. Too bad about Kodansha International, too.

RIP... I wonder if her condition was exacerbated by the stress of the recent disaster. I imagine such things will be more commonplace there for some time...

Such a shame to see...may she find peace in the next life and allow her family to find the strength to cope with this sad loss.
