I'm loving Kill la Kill so far. It's crazy and unpredictable and exactly what I want from a Gainax/Trigger anime.

I love the ridiculously sexy outfit and I'm not ashamed to admit it. While I was glad there was no gratuitous fan service in Attack on Titan, I would be genuinely saddened if there was none in this show. There's a kind of... rambunctious quality to the fan service in these shows that just works.

It would be cool if you start posting Watch and Learn articles on this show Tom. I think the Titan Talk Vice Pits complimented the written posts nicely last season.

Also, Ninjabread Men are totally a thing!

Kill La Kill was damn good but it no masterpiece or "Anime of 2013". It a great roller coaster ride of fun, silliness, and animation. As for something that is meaningful, gripping, and style, I would give that to Coppelion as of now since it slowness allows for be analyzing of the show. Still both stand strong this season, specially since many of the other shows are so low par compare to these two.

sickVisionz moderator on Oct. 14, 2013 at 6:42 p.m.

I was hoping it would be more like Panty and Stocking than Guren. Sadly, it's straight Guren for me. Really goofy but never actually funny. I get the feeling that the only thing I'll be able to enjoy is the art and animation, which would be better served by waiting for some dude on YouTube to do a Sakuga video on either the animators or a monthly round up of well done anime scenes.

I listed Trigger as one of my favorite studios because of their Gainax history but I'm starting to think that whatever elements stayed at Gainax had a critical role in creating the Gainax stuff I like and Trigger is literally just the animators. I like them best when they're doing Black Rock Shooter, Idolm@ster, and Sword Art Online and have like zero input on anything other than drawing stuff.

I'm so sorry you hate fun.

I bought a membership to crunchyroll just to watch this as it comes out...this was as crazy and wrong and awesome all at the same time. I REALLY wanted not to like it as it was to much like flcl but I couldn't bring myself not to....I may need to watch flcl again my tastes may have changed. Oh and if what you want is silly, over the top fan service then wait until episode 2....

The thread thing I haven't thought about that, can't tell in the second episode if she is wearing more but that would be an AWESOME way to do this, and since the show is still going if they haven't decided to do that...can we link them to here? :)

And to put this where it might actually get seen...I watched fist of the north star on your recommendation...how have I gone this long without seeing this?

takashichea moderator on Oct. 14, 2013 at 11:04 p.m.

Tom:

To help you with the scissors. To add on to the list with Dog & Scissor you mentioned earlier:

That's all I could remember.

I repost what I said on that Gurren Lagann post.

I watched Gurren Lagann back in May 2013 when Crunchyroll streams 3 episodes a week. It's an unforgettable show with a good cast of characters.

Kill la Kill is a light hearted version of Gurren Lagann. What Kill la Kill doesn't have is the awesome quote, the dream, and the drive to fight and never give up. Plus, Gurren Lagann builds these intense situations of life and death. Though, it's too early to call out Kill la Kill. No show can really fill in Gurren Lagann's shoes.

There's a hell of a lot more to fun than pretty visuals.

Marshal Victoryon Oct. 15, 2013 at 9:05 p.m.

@takashichea: Heh was gona list those to.

Back history on the scissors trope its considered in some cultures a womans weapon or faimlly/home weapon.Just like kitchen knife or long needles .Note in these anime you do not see a guy weilding scissors .

@zaldar: Ya i think Tom has the xp thing about right for the thread add to the blood sucking magic school girl dress. It may well add material to it which would be one hell of a twist to anime.Tho i think it may add power to the dress since it was designed to defeat the students coucils suits.

@sickVisionz: To be fair tho art an animation is more than half of what makes a good watchable anime .A great story with crapy animation that does not suit the story style makes it less watchable. But a meh story with great animation is still watchable.

While i dont think Kill la Kill is the new anime king by any means, its more a loony toons version of a anime.Which is why i put forth Tom can stomach the chibi parts because of its already over the top of over the top style. If mad magizine did anime it would be Kill la Kill.

takashichea moderator on Oct. 15, 2013 at 10:57 p.m.

@Marshal Victory:

None of these anime has a guy wielding scissors.

Ahem, take a look at Kiri Haimura, a man and a barber! Yeah, I know what you were saying. I did see that pattern.

FoxxFireArt moderator on Oct. 16, 2013 at 1:43 a.m.

I'm glad someone else is noticing the Orwellian themes. It almost makes me want to read ANIMAL FARM again. The remark about the Hitler's rise to power is interesting. At first, I thought this was the series way of telling the audience that the series takes place on Earth, but then they start mentioning real world regions in Japan. Is this the world that happened when there was no WWII?

The Goku Uniforms seem to symbolize Communism. They represent the oppertunity to excel based upon status. Giving more power to the ones with power. Everyone else is considered fodder, gears of the machine.

Ryuko's outfit draws memories of WITCHBLADE, the early version. It always struck me as silly to see Sara's clothes would be torn asunder but she seemed completely unaffected by it. Ryuko has an honest reaction to her situation. She's not happy about it, but it gives her the power she needs.

Has anyone else noticed the flashing stars of the Goku Uniforms are equal to the number for that uniform. However, when Senketsu is activated there's a flurry of flashes. What if the kamui are made to absorb power to grow?

I have a theory about those red threads of the Goku Uniform. There is a legend about the Red Thread of Fate in Japanese folklore. It's said that it ties people together who are bound by fate. What if someone is manipulating that thread?

Marshal Victoryon Oct. 16, 2013 at 3:36 a.m.

@takashichea: Ya i forgot he was a he .Didnt get iv treatment i was suposed to yesterday so achy an gona blame that .But his is barber scissors as noted.

@FoxxFireArt: Have heard of red thread of fate before.Actualy more than a few times in anime .Males generaly try to hit on females with the " we must be tied together by the red thread of fate." line. Also about the Hitler part i wonder how much is that political or just enuff so that it still can be shown in germany. Also got same thoguhts on the uniforms to an what they could reprisent. But then again implied intent can always be misinterpited.

That's quite a theory, Foxx. I never thought Kill la Kill was that subtle and deep. I take it back that series was all about goofy animations. I should have caught the communism part when Satsuki was talking about the Goku Uniforms in episode 2.

FoxxFireArt moderator on Oct. 16, 2013 at 11:46 a.m.

@Marshal Victory: @takashichea:

Go back and rewatch the opening theme for KILL LA KILL. Notice just how often the theme of the red thread appears.

The idea of communism is also in the city. The separation be rich and poor is sudden and dramatic. The thing that is interesting is that Ryuko is surprised by this city. If this was a world wide way of life, this shouldn't be so surprising to her. She doesn't live that far away.

Marshal Victoryon Oct. 16, 2013 at 12:41 p.m.

@FoxxFireArt: I tend to avoid anime openings like the plauge.Mostly becuase more than not they will spoil a series .Same with end credits. But i will look this time.To play devils advocate tho im sure some who lean "left" would argue that its a capalist system because of rich to poor. While ignoring the friends doc is a illegal doctor much like the ones out side of state medicine.

Im with ya on this.I had that same vibe from it .But again with any creators intent is always askewed by its viewers perseption. Then again it could well be a stab at comunisum .Knowing full well how anime is bootleged in china its a posible sub text.

Ryuko could be surprised by the city because shes a transfer student .Not sure how far away the school she went to was tho.Would not be to far out of odds that she lived at the other school. No mention of her mother so she could have been living with her as well.

Thanks for the heads up! Prior to that post I thought animation was a wholly irrelevant aspect of anime.

Marshal Victoryon Oct. 16, 2013 at 4:03 p.m.

@sickVisionz: From your other post you made it out like it was a wholly irrelevant aspect of anime.Or did i miss read "There's a hell of a lot more to fun than pretty visuals." ?

"Hell of a lot more" implies as a major percent of what makes a anime good over all.If the story is average but animation is good many times people stick around hoping the story gets better. If the story is average an the animation if poor people dont stick around. As a general thing.

Then again didnt you do a whole article on animation an where the budget is spent?

zaldaron Oct. 16, 2013 at 11:06 p.m.

@Marshal Victory: You are getting Sick Visonz confused with me I'm the guy who thinks story is more important than art..but I come from novels so that is why I expect. It is interesting that people see communism in the uniforms I saw only Facisim in that communism is (supposed) to be about making everyone equal where in its most dog eat dog social evolutionary stage capitalism would be like this but definitely fascism where your entire existence is for the state.

I hope it isn't simply a red string of fate thing but that the clothes are increasing as she becomes more powerful - I think in the preview for episode three we see that the president has a similar uniform but it isn't nearly as revealing. Still I enjoy the show though it isn't something I would watch alone but with beer and with a group that I can laugh at the complete zanyness with yup!

Marshal Victoryon Oct. 17, 2013 at 12:06 a.m.

@zaldar: With the way the day has gone thats posible.Tho way it read or way i misread it.Either way im not saying story is not needed. But with out quality or complimtary art to back up the story it fails more often than not as anime is a visual medium.

Regarding communism its a wonderful dream that ignroes humans base motives. You end up with less haves an more have nots.Facisim can survie an bloom in communism but it grows like a Kudzu in socialism.Nazi germany would be the easy example i think.

It could be both the suits could be made an powered with a fate thread. As well as cloth coverage increase when one suite destroys another. Its a looney tune anime that could have some deeper meaning to its madness.

zaldaron Oct. 17, 2013 at 12:37 a.m.

@Marshal Victory: Oh don't get me wrong in no way was I defending communism here...by all means I don't like it or socialism aka the way America is going. Ohh and that would be fun...she gets new threads but they COME from the presidents suit...deconstruction and construction all at the same time...it would be like Eva and Gurran Lagan...if they were one show! THAT would be impressive.

I find story more important than art honestly though I know I am in a minority here. I have never left a show because of it's art (though I have come close once - forget the name but was a samuri show that was very different and was character driven but had the long lanky tall male characters that I don't like, I ended up staying because the characters were so interesting. Tom talked about the show at some point I think long ago but I don't remember what it was or have time to find it - I watched it on youtube legally so was probably a funimation show) but I have left plenty of shows due to story...

Marshal Victoryon Oct. 17, 2013 at 1:46 a.m.

@zaldar: would that show be Rurouni Kenshin thats only one i can think of hes talked about rcently. An its art work can be stuning.Samurai Champloo might be it to.

Dont see a right or wrong in the art vs story.its just opion .I am just saying genral rule of thumb most seem to stick with show hopeing the show stroy gets better an it has decent art. Where as if the story is great but the art lacks less even try it or stick with it.Recent example of this for me personaly would be Gatchaman Crowds stuck with it because i kept hoping the story would get better ( an it did not ) but the art style an animation were pretty good.

But i have been watching Mobile Suit Gundam an it sure is not for the art.Feels very deep sci fi an way beyond its time.So the story has kept my attention.
