KILL LA KILL #8 Guiltless Entertainment, Now?

Episode #8 -- Watch & Learn. Where to even start?

Now, this is more like it! If this plot had come an episode or two sooner, the show so far would be nearly faultless, pacing-wise. After circling around a little, KILL LA KILL finally gets the radical premise change it needed - - and I’m tickled by how that switchback turn comes wrapped up in another brilliant blow-up of BATTLE ROYALE.

(And again, seeing as how bloody scholastic satires which would NEVER fly stateside come up a lot in Japan, I can’t help but wonder about how much it speaks to the ruthless competition of real life entrance exams…)

There’s just a lot to like in this episode…

  • The run 'n gun with the allied automotive/airsoft association.
  • The incongruously cordial relationship Ryoko has with her rivals while they’re off the clock.
  • The flashback finally revealing how Ryoko’s Dad died (and how he looks exactly her uniform).
  • The flashback revealing how this school council actually had rather noble origins.
  • The utterly bizarre gimp outfit and its 'hard' growing powers.
  • The fact that we’ve pretty much set-up what’d be the epic showdown in any other series.

And the list goes on. Weirdly enough, I think the amount of… healthy bad taste has evened out enough in this show that our earlier… concerns about the T&A don’t seem to stick out as much. I can enjoy this without guilt (well, not as much guilt, at least). What frenetic fever dream of high school.

Guess the only step the show could take to top this, now, would be bringing us to Nudist Beach...?

Watch this episode, I'll Wipe My Own Tears,” and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode.

See I think they had to have the crazy beginning stuff before they got to this I don't know. Still this was a really good episode and yeah the whole noble motives thing was pretty interesting, but we got some of that last episode with her comment right before the fight. Still going to be interesting to see where they take this!

yes, yes, and YES!, I agree this episode finally brought KILL LA KILL closer to that same strange combo of off the wall, juvenile, nonsense, and "high spirit feels" drama, that made GURREN LAHGAN such a standout guilty pleasure,

go ahead TRIGGER, punish me more!, keep punishing me, the more you punish me!, the harder it is to stop watching!,

punish me till that moment comes when episodes like this cause me to explode with blushing amusement!,

sorry that joke makes me feel.........SHAME LA SHAME,

Boy do I feel conflicted. I like how they finally decided to give a more detailed origins behind Matoi, but I also have to question why they waited until the eighth episode to do so. I liked Ira's backstory, but felt MAD uncomfortable when he started fighting. I really liked how everyone get's along when they aren't on campus and how this episode had new set pieces, but DAMMIT we are back in the arena the next episode.

I'm excited to see where this goes next, but I'm still concerned about where it goes. Also:

I got the weird sense that the show is hinting that Senketsu is Matoi's father, and if that actually happens fuck everything this is the worst thing ever.

Loved the episode more than the last episode. Enjoyed seeing more of Ira and Ryuko's backstories.

@ZombiePie:

That's a good theory.

@zaldar: Yup agreed. But then again most facist start out with "noble " ideals an goals.An she does say she take the power for herself in the flashback.

@ZombiePie: Maybe had similar thought but this show i try not to think to far ahead.Just enjoy the looney toones while they on key so to speek.

No one else noticed bit more animation repition ? It had to been on purpose like the older hana barbera stuff sued to do.

Has anyone considered for a second that Ryuko's mother may not even be dead. Perhaps Ryuko was only told that her mother died at birth. He kept his daughter away for another reason.

It's come to the point that I start grinning when I hear that Satsuki theme start up. I've really become fond of her. She has some kind of hidden agenda.

@ZombiePie
Last time I read the Japanese site, it said that Senketsu has the will of Ryuko's father. Seeing how kamui are living clothing, maybe they imprint the personality of their creator. That might also explain why Junketsu was sealed away.
