KILL LA KILL #5 Will Make You Laugh And... Feel Something?

Episode #5 -- Watch & Learn. A friendlier shadow looms!

I’ve often said that comedy shows tend to fare better in dubs. For one, as they say, comedy is all about timing, and when you have that delay where you've got to read a gag after it’s been delivered, the humor unavoidably loses a bit of punch. There’s also the issue of comedy often depending on very specific cultural idioms, and those tend to go through a better translation process when somebody has to actually read them aloud.

Maybe it’s because this takes place in a scenario so far afield of Japanese reality that anybody can grasp the dialog...

Maybe it’s because the humor is mostly physical - - complemented by dialog and not dependent on it…

…but this had to be one of the funniest single episodes I’ve ever watched for this column.

The show’s finally settled into a solid sitcom set-up, as Ryoko’s antagonism with her suit sets up even further misunderstandings with her host family. I was just tickled when they were spying on her, scratching their brows bemusedly over her less-than-charming, eccentric habit of talking to her clothes. The addition of the school’s Gardening Club chair, and the unforgivable transgression suffered upon his roof-top flower patch, was a stitch too.

Maybe it’s a little inside ball… but I was also amused by how Ryoko’s would-be assassin was packing pretty much the exact same model of high caliber sniper rifle that Yoko carried around in GURREN LAGANN. It’s a safe bet that the lead animator’s sketchbook is just filled with studies of that cannon.

To be honest, I wasn’t totally clear about why the mohawked hit man was brought in. Obviously, he was targeting Ryoko’s potentially parasitic partner… but the circumstances of what crossed their paths were a little muddled. Regardless, I’ve got to say that the emotional connection that this ordeal establishes between the two heroes was actually rather touching. The GUYVER fan in me is continuing to dig this show’s spin on the familiar symbiote power-suit balance of power…

Watch the first episode, Triggerhere, and decide for yourself, then hear my previous comments on the show here.

This whole episode was comedy gold!, I loved how the Mohawk dude's nail gun is capable of beneficial acupuncture!, or how about that other girls spastic rants cuting in to the most dramatic moments again and again, all that centered around a school girl who became BFFs' with her own uniform!, this gentle men is why we watch.

The anti-tank rifle is also the same design as the one wielded by Lieutenant Kitsurubami in FLCL when she tries to kill Conti.

Just watched this one an really liked the flow an pace this one had. Mohawk guy reminded me of the Punisher alot.

Also genraly when you see that square muzzel on a sniper rifle generaly its used for sound supression (not a silencer). Its also seen on anti tank weapons firing 20mm shells like

@Killy: Hehe ya i seen that an thought anti tank to.But you can get them for lesser rifels as well.Tho the Lahi-l-39 just screams anime weapon.cause people are not gona be one handing that 140 lb rifle. But anime physics its posible.

It was a fun episode way better than episode 4. Tsumugu Kinagase is like the baby that Yoko and Kittan would have had.

such a good episode! Was afraid this was going to become the shonen torunament style so glad it didn't..and no comment on the nudist beach...that made me crack up and the idea of a naked nudist beach solider....HA! Yes comedy gold definitely...and the attacking acupuncture I approve.
