KILL LA KILL #19 Turns Your Wardrobe Against You!

Episode #19 -- Watch & Learn. Clothes are evil!

KILL LA KILL gets its own DAYS OF FUTURE PAST / AGE OF APOCALYPSE flash-forward where all the bad guys turn good to fight against a legion of deadly, flying automatons? Awesome.

The show seesaws in the quality of its execution, but now that all these disparate threads are (pun intended) starting to tie together, I’m having a better time. The Four Horseman have finally abandoned their power suits to join Nudist Beach and do battle with the newly-sentient, and newly-evil Goku uniforms they once wore? Ryuko has been revealed to be some sort of Life Fiber chosen one? These developments seem like they were made up ad hoc, but kudos to Trigger for the cleverness of their improv skills.

(The revelation that Ryuko’s father actually got a make-over and disguised his identity seems more like a hasty retcon, but whatever…)

Regarding the sexual torture that Raygo subjects Satsuki to: when this particular… sub-plot showed up during that bathhouse flashback, it seemed like it was going to be another one of the show’s ill-advised attempts at titillation. As it’s developed, I guess it’s fit better within the tropes of heroic fiction in anime.

I don’t know if we’d classify this show as shonen, but as we’ve been seeing in HUNTER X HUNTER, when shonen shows set villains up, they don’t pull any punches about making them the most vile and reprehensible monsters. Whether it be Hisoka getting sexual gratification during his fights with Gon, or Raygo molesting Satuski for years, there’s no question that you, as a viewer, want to see these shitbags get the worst comeuppance imaginable. It's uncomfortable, yes, but... that's the point, isn't it?

Watch, Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head” and decide for yourself, then read my comments about the previous episode.

I said it once I'll say it again, Nineteen can be summed up with the " Emergency Rescue Suction Device " . Cause dont that just say it all?

Still think they like messing with how we the viewer thinks the show will go. At times it almost feels like the writers are breaking the 4th wall themselves.

@Marshal Victory: I have to agree with you there

Whoa, whoa, whoa... hold up Tom. Have you already forgotten everything from episode 18?

The Four Horseman have finally abandoned their power suits to join Nudist Beach and do battle with the newly-sentient, and newly-evil Goku uniforms they once wore?

The Goku Uniforms (the school uniforms) were Satsuki's fight fire with fire strategy. The COVERS (the white suits) were always the enemy. They only stopped using the Goku Uniforms because they wore out, as demonstrated during this episode.

Ryuko has been revealed to be some sort of Life Fiber chosen one?

If by "chosen one" you mean "genetically modified at birth" then... sure?

These developments seem like they were made up ad hoc, but kudos to Trigger for the cleverness of their improv skills.

This is a 25 episode original anime series, it's not the kind of "make it up as you go along" deal that One Piece or Bleach is. I would be very surprised if the major story beats weren't all set in stone before production began.

Marshal Victoryon Feb. 21, 2014 at 11:08 p.m.

@Daniel_Newton: Yeah gota agree here with ya. Just on animation an story boards its all planed out before the 1st episode is done. Other shonen suffer from the improv filler because they run outa source.

One could compare it to how a good smart actor can play dumb an make dumb look real. In this case To be this clever an have so many undercurents in the story Trigger had plans in place. Also as small evidence of that. When the second half started the titles for each episode were aready leeked an what songs they corisponded to.

Then again they have fewer finger prints on this to. So a tighter work group an focused vision sees clearly here what should be done. They had no manga to work from or other writers fans to apease so to speek.

I wonder how Satsuki chan will get molested next week, they seem to keep trying to out do themselves in this regard, first the bath, then a grope/bloody beat down, now this.

Also gamma x mako confirmed

Seeing as Kill La Kill is a 25 episode series, I doubt any of the plot was made ad hoc. There are just parts of the plot that aren't made apparent by the plot and instead make the viewer have to think about what they mean.

I usually dislike "chosen one" plots, but Ryuko was specifically operated on so that she could more efficiently synchronize with the life fibers. It's explained in the plot.

It does seem like Kill La Kill has gone multiple directions with the plot, but despite that I am still enjoying how the show plays out so not many complaints from me.

I disagree with the notion that everything was nessesarily pre planned. Yes as a 25 episode series most things should have been laid out beforehand, but certain factors could arise that would alter that, be they budget issues, the way the show is being received, creative differences, ect. Hell just look at evangelion.

This is Triggers first full series. The notion that this company would invest their first production on the fly when it comes to the story just doesn't make any sense. This is going to be setting the tone for for everything they do after this point. Think about the amount of time it takes to write, storyboard, animate, and record voice work.

People have become far too jaded where they want answers to questions as soon as they're given. That's not the way these series work. There have been a few production delays, but those are only for a few hours. You can't imagine that they're making up entire scenes within that stretch of time, right?

There are actually a LOT of anime series where the production schedule is super tight. In fact, what's eventually released on DVD can at times look drastically different than what was originally aired. CODE GEASS had that same issue. Things are often completely reanimated.

It wasn't destiny that choose Ryuko to be special. She was experimented on. She's one of the ultimate victims of her parents' manipulations.

This has to be probably one of the most vile character's Romi Park has ever voiced for. Ragyo is despicable, and I finally understand her constant molesting of Satsuki. Satsuki rage will somehow help fuel her next plan. The whatever she's keeping Satsuki alive for next. I so hope she escapes next episode.

It's already been confirmed that the final volume of the DVD in Japan will have a special extra episode.

@FoxxFireArt: Idk trigger is somewhat of a successor studio to Gainax, which ppl often speculate ad libbed the ending to eva.

Really its just speculation either way but yes, I could imagine them making up entire scenes on the fly. Necessity is the mother of invention and in a high pressure environment (as you pointed out klk will set the tone for triggers future, doesn't get more high pressure than that) they may indeed have to change the plot at a moments notice if the corporate big wigs think it will yield a net benefit. We know klk has had minor delays all ready, suggesting its at least a possibility.
FoxxFireArt moderator on Feb. 24, 2014 at 8:12 a.m.

@hitsusatsu11:

Think about how much time it takes to write the scene, draw the storyboards, animate a scene, paint the backgrounds, and record the voice work. Do you really think that's something that could just be made up as they go along? Voice acting alone can take a long time, and some of these actors are doing multiple series.

The delays are more likely due to the animation needing touching up, and at most the delays are no more than a few hours. Hardly enough time to be making up whole new plot points. That's partly why TV airing will often look wildly different than what's released on DVD (check out the link I added above). The English delays are longer, because they have less time to translate and put on subtitles.

It's already been confirmed that the final DVD will have the series' final episode. Probably a special. So, they have the story's end already written.

People's speculation is hardly fact. The references to EVANGELION's budget issues doesn't really apply. That was mainly due to the director trying to do things that the technology just hadn't been able to allow people to do. At least, not within the schedule permitted. That was the cause of that show's problems.

zaldaron Feb. 25, 2014 at 7:18 p.m.

I expect that there were no retcons here and all this was planned - show is really coming along and should have been as popular as attack on Titan or Madokka. It doesn't quite reach the levels of awesomeness that is Madokka but....how ironic is it going to be for people to cosplay this....talk about really not getting the point.

I wonder if Japan is going to have a rash of Nudists now...that would be rather hilarious.

  1. Nonon is jealous of the guys looking great in the nude.
  2. Ira has a thing for Mako.

That are my 2 favorite things about this episode.

Love the Ira x Mako dynamic. It's nice to see big-bad-Ira has a soft side.

I prefer Nonon though. Cute, spunky attitude, adorable voice.

@Daniel_Newton:

Nonon became like a Tsukkomi, a straight man. Oh, I see your taste in women, Daniel.

Daniel_Newton moderator on Feb. 28, 2014 at 5:38 p.m.

@takashichea: My taste in anime ladies is wide and varied, but yeah, Nonon has become more and more likeable.
