You should open yourself up to Slice of life anime because it dive deeper into characters more than the crazier ones.
Kids on the Slope is one of those shows that uses a pretty terrible character trope and somehow makes the show more enjoyable. Specifically, I'm talking about Kaoru's giant inferiority complex. It keeps him unable to capitalize on his attraction to Ritsuko as he feels Sen is far more worthy of her. But what it manages to do is to keep the romance element from flooding the show, letting the underlying backbone of the story to remain the friendship between Kaoru and Sentaro.
