Keanu Reeves To Headline The Akira Remake, Now?

Whoa.

Hah… just when the COWBOY BEBOP live action movie seems to have docked permanently, Keanu Reeves has started circling another Western anime adaptation. Vulture says the dude may be dropping Spike's cheap suit for Kaneda’s leather jacket, as he’s now being courted to play the lead in the Hughes Bros’ remake of AKIRA. Considering how Keanu’s a good 30 years away from his teens, and how Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling were the last actors considered for the part, it’s safe to say that the character’s been significantly re-conceived from the anime and the manga.

If this flick does go through, Warner’s committed to dropping some serious scratch for it. The budget’s been tallied at $230 million and, even if that’s divvied up between two movies, that’s still a huge chunk of change. They’ve been trying to find another studio to co-finance the flick, but it might fall entirely on their pockets and, if that happens, then they’re really going to want a bankable star to lead the movie. Enter Keanu. As I recall, this was pretty much what happened with the first MATRIX movie.

Keanu’s inclusion will probably get a lot of you lunatics’ blood boiling. Let’s hear the yays and nays.

They're just f****n' with us now right?

Isn't Keanu Reeves like 40 years old now? At least he's more Asian than all those dudes rumored to be in the movie before.

This crap'll be debunked soon anyway.

Why cant he just keep to this Bill and Ted remake and leave anime movies alone. The Matrix movies were good at one, then they had to screw things up by making two more.

This will never happen.

why must hollywood continue to entice me to do violent things toward them...

I've been taking this whole Akira lead thing as one large gag played by Hollywood to tick off the American anime audience, but, then again, Dragonball: Evolution happened, so I dunno...

You what? Just fucking make the movie and be done with it.

It will be like a polio vaccine. One and then you are done. Make the live action adaptation, with an all American cast, and with a bastardized script so is that we don't have to deal with bullshit rumors ever fucking month. Anime fans should just bend down and take a knee this time so is that we all can just move on with our lives and pretend it never happened.

Jesus Christ just give to Uwe Boll or the dynamic duo of Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer so is that there is no illusion of this movie ever being good. But for the love of God just make the fucking movie.

I can imagine him chasing Tetsuo, and when he is about to shoot him, he realizes he cant and starts shooting to the air while shouting....... XD

I think extracts of the script appeared throught the net and they were god awful

How sad a life do you have to have to be 46 and still pickin' fights with other motorcycle gangs on the streets of Mega-New York?  Keanu is 46 years old!  Kaneda is a young hot-tempered punk, not a grumpy middle-aged dude.  What next, Diane Lane as Asuka Langley Soryu in a Neon Genesis movie?  Hollywood needs to stop fixating on stars and instead find actors that fit the roles.  If they want stars then put them in the secondary roles like Colonel Shikishima or even the three espers.

There's a lot of truth in that.  Now that a Dragon Ball movie was finally made, we never have to wonder why Hollywood doesn't capitalize on that popular license.  They did, it sucked, what's up next?  If they make this "inspired by elements in the anime/manga Akira" movie, then we can get a bit excited at first followed by complete demoralization when it arrives in theaters.  Then there will be a few 4Chan memes.  Finally, we put it behind us and wonder when someone will make a live-action Naruto movie.

You know, I'm okay with this. I honestly am. However, when they cast Nicholas Cage for any role in this movie, then I will call haberdash on this whole premise. Not to mention last we heard about the Akira movie, wasn't Zac Efron cast as one of the lead roles?

ummmm...

Cowboy Bebop was looking good, but this whole Akira thing is looking just weird though. DBE's issue were pretty basic however this movie seems to be working to hard to get nowhere.

Keanu's definitly a bankable star & he did a great job in the first Matrix movie!
PS: Lol at red glow : )
