Karigurashi no Arrietty Grosses 1.4 Billion Yen on Opening Weekend

On the race to beat Ponyo!

It's no mystery that Studio Ghibli films make a ton of money. That being said, one still can't help but be a bit curious about  how a new one will perform, and this last weekend Japan saw the opening of
Karigurashi no Arrietty, the newest Ghibli project based on the Mary Norton novel The Borrowers. Mantan (Via ANN) reported that opening weekend was not too shabby, earning roughly 1.35 billion yen (about $15.6 millon US), which is about 85% of what the previous Ghibli film, Ponyo on the Cliff By the Sea, took in within the same time period.

It'll still be some time before we see a US release of the film, but I expect it'll generate even more success in the next few weeks as more people make it out to theatres. Are you looking forward to it?

Films released under the  Studio Gibli "brand" are generally great. Can't wait to watch this one.

"Why dont they make an anime, wouldn't  that be great. I'll still check out this title,   Ghibli love peeps! "

Huh?  That made no sense.

I look forward to seeing this when it comes stateside.  Though I know I'll forget all about it until I see it on DVD or something.  :\
