JOJO'S STARDUST CRUSADERS Massacres with Hilarity!

Episode #4 -- Watch & Learn. References!

Well, there’s another character that was subsequently ripped off. Anybody here play SNK fighting games? Have you noticed the blatant similarities between Dio’s new minion here and Benimaru of KING OF FIGHTERS? I mean, the only thing that differentiates them is the shade of bleach…

And while we’re tallying references, I don’t know if any of the Stands’ names have paid homage to musicians, but I suppose this guy’s ‘Silver Chariot’ could be a reference to Silver Chair. Or maybe to the Narnia book, depending on the timing…

(Pun intended) the stand-off with that giant beetle on the plane deck had to be one of the most delightfully absurd scenes in this entire scene. I… just… I mean… the bug blasts through an entire line of sleeping passengers so it can write ‘massacre’ on the wall with their blood as if it’s some cryptic warning! That Stardust Crusaders saw what he just did! There’s no hinting about it, now!

The resolution makes the scene even more amusing. After Joseph successfully lands the plane, he realizes they can’t continue this journey on conventional routes, lest they endanger any more innocents. So, in other words, these big dudes are simply too bad ass to travel like common men. It’s like that one scene in FIST OF THE NORTH STAR where Kenshiro’s bunk explodes after he wakes up and rolls out of it… because it simply couldn’t handle his manliness!

5000+ Honorary XP to whomever can explain to me what musical acts Kakyoin, Tower Gray and the various Stands’ names are in reference. I’m a completest about this, now. I want to see charts breaking down all the references. I simply must know them all!

Watch "Tower of Gray" and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous batch of episodes.

All of the current Stands aren't based on music. They're based on cards from the Tarot deck. The musician Stands don't come in until much later.

SNK's design docs actually call Benimaru "Polnareff", so it's completely intentional.

Tower of Gray is just a Tarot reference, but according to the JoJo wiki, the old dude is called "Gray Fly", which is kind of a fuddled reference to founding member of The Eagles, Glenn Frey, as they are mostly written the same in Japanese.

Araki grew up in Sendai, Japan, and one of Sendai's towns is named Kakyoin.

What I learned so far, fighting games like Street Fighter and SNK love Jojo. Jojo's mangaka loves making references to music. So far, the Stands are connected to the Tarot Cards. I haven't got shots for Jojo's gang's Tarot Cards yet. Tarot Cards are a pretty cool concept I seen in many anime shows.

This and last episode shows off one of my favorite characters: Mohammed Avdol.

As others have said the stands are tarot cards....think persona but not as philosophical.

I loved playing as Benimaru!

Not all characters or Stands have to be named after music. I think it tends to be the villains that are named after music and musicians.

@takashichea: All of their cards are in the ED. Not clearly represented like that, but they're shown.

@zaldar: The Persona are nearly the same as the card theme in JoJo's. they're both based off the tarot, and significant characters are paired with a card.

Oh, I'm such a wiki nerd. I did get eyecatches but without the tarot cards.

@takashichea:You don't have them with the English subbing?

I turn off the English subs on Crunchyroll when I wiki edit (and this is why I love about Crunchyroll.) Our wiki policy dictates we upload clean images with no captions and watermarks. If you like I can PM you or set up a drop box for you - to send the English subtitled ones personally.

@takashichea: No, that isn't necessary.
