JOJO'S BIZARRE ADVENTURE Stretches A Little Thin?

STARDUST CRUSADERS #18 -- Watch & Learn. Evil Sun!

While it tickles my black heart to think that the germ of this idea might’ve come from Araki taking a thoroughly morbid angle on “Here Comes the Sun,” I have to admit the amusement doesn’t go too far beyond that. I don’t know, the gimmick’s staring to stretch a little thin.

How many minions have we gone through, so far? I lost count long time ago. There’s always a meter with a dancing needle on these sorts of serials. I might point to some epics that could’ve used a couple told-in-one’s to loosen the pace with some variety, but I can cite far more episodic shows that got repetitive fairly fast with their villains/monsters/mushi of the week. STARDUST CRUSADERS has been getting around that, for the most part, by making the evil Stand users as diverse as possible. No two Stand’s ever look alike, and the Stardust Crusaders are put through different kinds of struggles each time, rarely ever just solving things with brute force.

Still, I can’t remember the last time we saw Dio - - you know, the big bad of these season - - and I’d really like this to start adding up more.

Part of this might be due to the nature of the threat in this episode. This Stand is taking the Stardust Crusaders down with attrition, slowly sweating them dry until they’ll die of dehydration. Having suffered through this after a couple hikes, I can vouch for the effects seeming rather accurate. It’s such a subtle process that you really don’t know you’re dehydrated until your tongue’s dry and your head’s throbbing.

Maybe it’s just the whole part where they spot the user. Again, I’m used to the formula of these good guys pulling a brilliant, near-deus ex machine to defeat the bad guys at the last minute. But the gag with the mirror-covered hut just seemed a bit reaching.

Watch "the Sun" and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode.

I Second This.

This is my major issue with SDC; at first, it just drags on w/o any major story development (like Saint Seiya Before the beginning of the Gold Saints Arc), "the Stand User of the week" format gets old fast, so before the manga/anime actually gets good you're barely kept entertained.

Hell, even PB got straight to the story and kept me entertained a bit, even though it's the worst JJBA Part.

But pretty much all of JoJo is a "of the week" series, just PB and BT are short enough you don't notice, and the rest of the series, all the way to the current stuff in JoJolion, is still Stand Of The Week/Month.

Anyway, every part from Stardust on is longer than parts 1 and 2 combined, which only came out to 113 chapters. SDC is 152 chapters.

And The Sun in the manga was only about 2 chapters long, mostly a breather/comedy encounter. I think David did a pretty good job with it. We're almost at the halfway point, and as much as I really like the first half of Stardust, the second half is much much better.

@rubberluffy: Yeah, you're right. Later Parts of JJBA uses the "X of The Week" format, but there's a difference...it's actually entertaining. In Part 3 they get kinda boring after a while. Also, In PB Araki could have used "Zombie of the week" or in BT "Vampire of the week" and made them longer, instead he didn't, and I think he made the right choice.

This episode wasn't that great. Best moment for me was Joseph and the gang who were laughing hysterically.

In the Dreamcast video game, they had a similar villain who wasn't hiding in the same way this villain was hiding. He was just very far away.

I think that a mirror hut would not work, because of the light of the true sun bouncing off of it. If he just had a mock-up of a desert scene as his hideout, it would've been better.

Having been dehydrated ( to the point of being on IV ) far to many times my self would agree that part was done well. But overall the episode felt like filler. Did not get the pop/rock easter egg if any.

@rubberluffy: Hmm thats kind of interesting the "sun" sets at the half way point.
