JOJO'S BIZARRE ADVENTURE is the Shonen Antidote!

#10 -- Watch & Learn. How much crazier could this show get?!

See, I really wish more serials would do timeskips like this. Instead of plodding out every single step from Point to Point Z, why not hop over the less interesting stuff? Why not shake up the characters and the cast dynamic? Why not make it all killer and no… * GASP *… filler?

The contrast is all the more pronounced because I’m watching the ‘Chimera Ant’ arc at the same time as this. For a story that’s about three decades old, now, this really is a breath of fresh air (pun absolutely intended). The way the plot flitted around, non-chronologically, was exhilarating. I totally understand what the hype’s been about, this whole time.

I’ve read and watched more superheroic fiction than any sane human being should, and I can honestly say that this one episode does about three things I’ve never seen anywhere else…

  1. Jojo #2 earns, like, 3X brownie points for the way he meets Smokey. Not only does he forgive this scamp who’s robbed him, not only does he defend this scamp… he also goes on to brutalize the crooked cops who’ve been bullying him with the most hysterical overkill.
  2. Likewise, the way Jojo #2 solves the hijacking had to be the most manic character introduction ever. Jojo #1’s defining trait was the way he got stronger the more you beat on him, right? Well Jojo #2’s trait is to flip out at the slightest provocation. I love it.
  3. I love how this episode doesn’t end with a cliffhanger so much as with a “Shit yeah!” moment. You think we’re in store for another ominous stinger with the new, mysterious villain? Nope. Jojo’s going to march straight up to him, question him about his game and blast him with a Tommy Gun he just pulled out of hammer space.

Just when I thought the show might’ve been losing steam, it took a big breath, shot its veins with an electric dose of Hammon energy, flexed its bicep until they were a net of veins and then seized me by throat. Bring on Episode #11. Now.

Watch "New York’s Jojo" and decide for yourself, then read my comments about the previous episode.

Just wait til you watch episode 11 because it has the new opening song, which is stylish as HELL. Great animation and really slick song, after Part 1's blood pumping intensity it feels really different but also a perfect match.

Joseph was a stark contrast to his grandfather, Jojo, who is a true gentlemen. I find Joseph a bit annoying, but he's pretty entertaining to watch. It's too bad Smokey doesn't appear much in the later episodes. I thought he will be the sidekick like Komatsu in Toriko.

Yeah, JoJo 2 is a wild, crazy fuck! That. Tommy gun.

@rubberluffy: 1st JoJos theme is my favorite, but the second grew on me a lot, especially as we got further into the season. I also love how the animation is made to fit with the music.

Oh yeah Tom, speaking of superheroes: in the anime young Joseph is reading Baoh (Araki's pre-JoJo series) on the plane, but in the manga he's reading Superman.

Jojo #1 could lift that rock, but Jojo #2 can make tommy guns appear.

I'm a bit worried that Jojo is cranking it up too much. I'm still enjoying it now, but with Jojo 2's highly aggressive personality things may go too far. I have no idea how they survived jumping out of that plane with a couple of chairs.

Having got into the show from the abridged series, I was astonished at how much the abridgement DIDN'T make up. You have seen NOTHING, but you don't need me to tell you that. You know that things are gonna get even more balls off the walls than they currently are.

But hey. You just saw a cave full of vampire masks. You know what's gonna happen.

Well Tom at this point I could not agree with you more about The contrast between this and Hunter X Hunter, Sadly That show has me once again eating my words, thinking The worst bits of the chimera arc were over and done with, I mean surely you would think once they get to the kings Palace things would get better right?, wrong!!!, The whole big showdown that was so heavily and slowly Built up, some how moves like cement, It's not filler, it's more like slow motion pacing from hell, So yeah when Hunter X Hunter is really good then painful for several episodes Then good again, rinse and repeat till your insane, So Way to go Jo Jo, I guess the old stuff really was better,

Funny thing is Jojo is a Shounen turned Seinen. Seems the cure for Shounen is Seinen. Lol.

Can someone draw this...please????

I would try to predict where this show is going...but I gave up on that after about episode three...I'm just enjoying the crazy as fuck ride. Wish they could put some meaning into it but eh - not sure it would work. I mean Kill la Kill was crazy...but this...I don't think they make words to describe this...so we have Dickens, Vampires, Kung Fu like a Jaki Chan show, and now maybe mobsters...I mean what next dark heavy political intrigue? Space Aliens on pogo sticks wielding chicken legs...fuck if I know?

@taichokage:

Well, Jojo isn't a cure for Shonen, because it targeting adults more then kids (that why it become a Seinen) It pretty much Shonen for adults

@Kino88:

Well, at lease you didn't read the Manga at the time. Togashi was going on hiatus, almost all the time doing the Chimera Ant arc :)

@zaldar:

LOL! It seem you understand the madness of Jojo

Anyway, I so do love Jojo time skips. I think I would be more into Attack Of Titan, if they switch out their characters

taichokageon May 6, 2014 at 2:45 p.m.
I was so mad. I've been current in HXH since 2009, back when a HXH thread could be made and no one would reply. The hiatus' were brutal and so random. In the last 5 years or so, the majority of time HXH has been on hiatus. But hiatus aside I really do enjoy the series. It drags at time but isn't dragged out nearly as much as One Piece or Naruto in the final arc. Still I like Jojo even more.
Destinyheroknighton May 6, 2014 at 6:06 p.m.

@taichokage:

I never feel that One Piece drag (only in Skypiea and Fishman Island arcs), and I enjoy One Piece more then HxH. I like HxH story a little better, but One Piece take my heart on how much funnier it is

I love me some Jojo, wish Viz finish the translation of the Manga

The Jojo anime works so well because there is 30 years of material to draw from, and they're not in danger of catching up for a while. The manga kind of just goes from one battle to the next, I think if I had been following it weekly (now monthly) rather than enjoying it in bulk I'd enjoy the series a lot less. Didn't the final battle in Part 7 take 2 years to fully play out?
