Japan's #1 Cosplay for 2008: Lucky Star Uniform

I bet the US's is Naruto. Damn headbands.

According to the Mainichi, the #1 most popular cosplay in Japan was the school uniform from Lucky Star-- it doesn't specify summer or winter uniform; I wonder if they count both? The #2 was Clannad's uniform, natch.

But those weren't the only big hits of 2008: Macross F was a popular choice, and by that I mean all three protagonists: Alto, Ranka, and Sheryl. (The Mainichi article has a really nice shot of a Sheryl performance costume that I kind of crave, even though I can't imagine wearing it.) Persona 4's uniform was popular for both guys and girls, and Gintama outfits remain a mainstay.

There are a couple of things I'm kind of surprised not to see: Gundam 00, Code Geass, and Vampire Knight-- maybe Japan's just getting over VK fandom as it truly launches in the US? But the anime just came out, so that seems unlikely. Hmm!

For you cosplayers out there-- and cosplay fans –what are you hoping to put together for 2009? (Or what are you hoping to see at cons?)
