Japanese Mangaka Writes Angry Letter to CNN About Rapelay

CNN gets told. Again.

As we all already know, CNN has been stirring up a lot of trouble with their angry ranting about a Japanese hentai game called Rapelay. Of course Japan has been following this issue as well, with most being angry at CNN for making a big deal about a silly game. Mangaka Nogami Takeshi has had enough, and wrote an open letter to CNN about the issue. Takeshi wrote Koutetsu no shoujo-tachi, Serafuku to juusensha, and on various artwork for Strike Witches. Of course he wrote it in Japanese, and has asked someone to translate it for CNN, and the blog Tsurupeta did just that.

Dear CNN reporter,

I am an author of manga [Japanese comic books]. I started out drawing hentai manga. I put out hentai books. Of course, I also draw manga that aren't hentai. Nowadays, most of my work consists of non-hentai manga.

I have seen your news report that tries to stir up fear, prejudice and misunderstanding. I have no connection with the spiffy hentai game featured in your report, I am sorry to say; however as an author of Japanese hentai manga, I think I am well qualified to object to the views you present. As this objection had to be put together promptly, precise data will be presented later, but it is a fact that in this 21st century, we Japanese enjoy one of the most safe and peaceful societies on Earth. Naturally, that is not to say that our society is without problems, but to be honest, I frankly do not think that you are the ones to tell us.

Men and women are equals in politics and in the law. Your society and ours are no different there. Moreover, the crime rate statistics for both general crime and sex crime in Japan are, with all due respect, several times lower than in the United States. Did you, for instance, fear for your safety while walking the streets of Akihabara, or Ikebukuro (holy ground of hentai books for women)? They're probably many times safer than the streets of New York, let alone those of the suburban housing districts around. (And guns are illegal, too.) Furthermore, in our Akihabara and Ikebukuro, there is no persecution of men or women alike, or of sexual minorities like homosexuals. We all live together in peace, expressing ourselves freely. It also goes without saying that human trafficking and violence against women are serious crimes in Japan too. As a Japanese citizen, I am deeply offended by the insulting implications of that so-called expert who associates Japanese people at large with heinous criminals. Is hentai detrimental to the upbringing of children? Yes, it some circumstances it may well be the case. It certainly true, for instance, of that game you reported about. I am an average citizen with a younger sister and two nephews; I can relate to your concerns. And precisely as such, I beg to differ with your argument.

Those products are developed for rational adults. You surely don't believe that a rational adult would be influenced by such a game into committing rape, do you? Of course, in Japan, both that game you reported about and the hentai manga I draw are only distributed and sold under strict age restrictions to adults.

That your children might obtain such materials on the Internet is a trouble for us as well. Those are pirated copies. We would be grateful if you could let families and schools issue proper warnings to children. And would it be too much to ask that appropriate age restrictions are put in place in stores in your country so that the rational adults can buy legitimate copies?

By the way, in the proud Japanese traditional popular art of ukiyo-e (woodblock prints from the Edo period), there were many works with sexual subjects, called shunga. You did like these too, didn't you? Well, we are their successors. We make works of art. Let me say that again. It is just art. I assume that you are capable of distinguishing fiction from reality like we do. Are you not? Obscenity? Ah well, on that point, I would rather quote from the book beside your bed.

"But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.” (John 8:1–11)"

I am afraid I am Buddhist, not Christian, but I respect your Lord nonetheless. His word that you, me and all mankind are hentai is pregnant with meaning. Yet, there is a difference between “His” views (that you share) and mine. I do not think that people being hentai is a sin. There is nothing wrong with rational people being hentai. I, at any rate, do not see anything wrong with that. Do you?

Sincerely,
Takeshi Nogami.

His letter is really nice, but I can only imagine CNN doesn't give a shit and will ignore it.

It is silly that CNN is making a big deal of his game which is like years old! I would like to know how the hell kids are able to download this since the only way to download it require a large knowledge of computer programing.

CNN brought it up to discuss something more recent, if I understood correctly.  It's unfortunate that that is the only thing they could think of, and dredged it up again.

Anyway, that letter rocks.  It's hilarious to me that Americans are making such a fuss over a game that isn't technically available to them.  The copy found on Amazon was being sold by a third-party completely unrelated to the people who made the game or even Amazon (an individual seller).  The uproar over that is totally ridiculous.  It's just something that exists somewhere; somewhere where it's already regulated through the proper channels.

While I like what this guy is trying to say and agree with him wholeheartedly, I can only see this as feeding the trolls.

If CNN even attempted to respond to this they'd simply put their own twists on it in an attempt to futher demonize the Japanese industry.

What I think is preposterous is when activists blame developers because the means of distribution is flawed. It's like if we wrote to our congressmen to complain every time a cop tases a 10 year old

Yeah, CNN didn't get told. All he did here was attack the messenger and treat Rapelay's simulated rape (against minors, I might add) as if it were exactly the same as any other pornography or hentai, which is really quite remarkable if you stop and think about it. You don't even have to believe that Rapelay should be censored to see his shallow argument for what it is.

Please God to not rely on CNN to give you a good idea of what Americans think and feel (and for that matter MSNBC, Fox or any news station affiliated with them).  The morons on that station have no idea what they're talking about.  They simply go on about this kind of bullarky that probably would have never gained much attention, if any, if they had not brought the story to light here in American.  They are a bunch of prudes who assume all Japanese people are sick perverted freaks for making such a game, as Takeshi Nogami quite wonderfully disproves.

Man oh man did CNN get raped by this letter
GWOtakuon April 6, 2010 at 6:37 a.m.
The media reports on bad things all of the time, Pleione. Do you seriously believe that the media's first duty is to ignore them if somebody's going to find them offensive or troublesome? Sorry, that's not its job.

And yes, there is something very wrong with the creators of the game and the people that have played it. Not all Japanese--which CNN didn't say.

Treating this like run-of-the-mill titillation is hopelessly wrong-headed and, quite frankly, does the best possible job of vindicating CNN's reporting.

He attacked CNN for making it the circus it made, and for the subjective way it reported. And he had a point, since for all the censure what CNN brought and you support, Japan has a much lower rape rate per capita than the morally upright US.  As you can see...

The UN rape report for each 100,000 individuals

 Canada: 78.08
Australia: 77.79
USA: 32.05
Sweden: 24.47
UK: 16.23
France: 14.36
S. Korea: 12.98
Germany: 9.12
Russia: 4.78
Taiwan: 4.08
Japan: 1.78

And while the Media duty isn't to ignore offended groups, it shouldn't play sides with them, like CNN did.

For all the "sick" japanese people that played it, still they are less than the American average. And everybody has a dark side, it's just a matter if they accept them and understand them, or on the other hand wary with it.

Like the writer said, CNN and americans have much more to worry than a japanese rape game, that is sold legally only on Japan.

Does your disgust extend to the millions of people who play videogames that involve murder?  Or are you saying rape is worse than murder?  What about the 30% to 50% of women who have rape fantasies?  ( http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/brainstorm/200805/why-do-women-have-erotic-rape-fantasies
