Japan Uses Moe To Combat Hikikomori/NEET Tendencies

Japan tries to draw hikikomori and NEETs out...with an online moe-girl.

Milk-chan!
Milk-chan!
That Japan wants to get hikikomori (shut-ins) and NEETs (people Not Engaged in Education or Training) into society as productive citizens is well-known; the latest attempt, apparently, isn't designed to turn them instantly into “normal” people. Instead, they're just aiming for normal-er...like, say, the kind of otaku who don't live with their parents and refuse to work.

How are they doing it? A new online “Support Station” featuring a moe-girl named Milk-- pehraps the name is designed to be a reference to “mother's milk,” which brings to mind feelings of supportive, caring, and loving mothers?

Anyway, the site has three steps to rehabilitation: talk to a professional career counselor, come up with an individual proposal/program and attend a seminar, and finally, find employment.

What do you think? Will it work?

It could work...and Milk is a really cute moe-girl mascot. :)

For some people maybe. But lets face it there are some people who don't want to put fourth the effort and don't want to change. You can't help the people who don't want it. As long a you do help the people who want to change the system will work for them.

Obviously a conspiracy by some find of career counselor syndicate.

Meh, I appreciate their effort (hell, it's a lot more motivated than a lot of reform programs here in the US), but I wouldn't count on their success being too great...

Dig Deeper into Hikikomori

Hikikomori are both an increasingly prominent archetype and an actual social phenomenon in Japan. The term refers to a certain type of person who becomes reclusive and withdraws from society at large.
