Wow-- even amidst all the fuss by Equality Now and the like, I never for a moment imagine that Japan would actually ban a profitable product like rape games. But Canned Dogs reports that a ban is, in fact, going to be put in place, and apparently the article reporting it even credits Equality Now with the ban.

Great, Japan, thanks a lot. Now they're going to get a big ol' swelled-up head and come to the US and try to censor our stuff. Good job. That's sarcasm, by the way. Rape is bad, but censorship is worse than fictional rape. I would normally tack an “in my opinion” on that, but given that-- to my knowledge --there are no credible studies proving that playing a rape game leads to real life rape, just like there are no credible studies proving that playing a violent game leads directly to real-life, I feel comfortable saying that.

Canned Dogs notes that the companies who focus 100% on rape games will have to either find ways around the new judging criteria for games or move on to a different genre, at least until it gets banned too.

Seriously, guys, I know that plenty of you will find these games to be disgusting-- but they are a symptom, not a cause, nor the end of the problem. Banning games does not change the culture, it just pushes a piece of the puzzle down to the bottom of a heap where it can fester.

In other words, booooooo.

I am not one for rape games, but I agree, fiction is fiction here. Censorship of this respect is a terrible thing. Rape Games don't hurt anyone, and banning them make make it worse for others. Lordy.

I may not agree with what you say, draw, or imagine, but goddamn, I will fight for your right to say, draw, or imagine it.

Your argument are valid, quite disorienting, but nevertheless valid.

Japan shouldn't let herself be pushed around by U.S. special interest groups.

Is raping somebody worse than killing somebody?  Isn't banning these games hipocrytical?  There are plenty of games where you can kill innocents.

Alright you guys, you know what, we need to start our OWN special interest group. Too long have stupid minority groups that are about as intelligent as doormats been thinking they can push around our [second?] favorite country and it's legislation just because they don't agree with something they don't understand. The other thing that REALLY ticks me off is that these same people hate it when fundamentalist Islams (etc.) scream and whine about their religious figure Mohammad being shown in the media and whatnot, yet what the hell do these people think THEY are doing then? It's no different!

@Kiriska: I wasn't quite thinking of Voltaire, but that's very true too!

Not a defence, per se, just supplying context:

Can't believe Japan actually caved in to Equality Now. As much as I hate eroge games (never knew there were rape games up until I heard this news a couple weeks ago), it's not real and no one's getting harmed. Fighting for women's rights is one thing. But making false assumptions on a game with fictional characters is ignorant and seems more like an excuse for Equality Now to get more PR for themselves.
