ISHIDA & ASAKURA #1-4 - - Special Review

I'm just as shocked... about why this micro-series exists.

Grouping this with our W&L on DBZ from earlier this morning, I suppose today’s theme is that dubs can be better than subs - - or at least presumptively better, in this case.

See, this is another one of the baffling micro-series that Crunchy Roll’s been importing this season, and I continue to scratch my head, wondering what sort of programming block they fit into. Since this is a gag show, and much less serious than the... cliffhanger (hee hee!) I just watched, I suppose it could be the anime equivalent of a Sunday funny like GARFIELD (or perhaps like OLD MASTER Q, if we want to keep the references Eastern here).

As I recall, CROMARTIE HIGH SCHOOL came from about the same place. And since this tongue-in-cheek skewering of high school delinquents was already reminding me of that particular show, I think it’s safe to say I’d enjoy a lot more if it were…

  1. Edited together into longer chunks.
  2. Dubbed by a translation staff who took a ton of creative license.

…in about the same fashion as CROMARTIE.

I want to like this show more. I smirk when it ribs at tough guy bromance and a titter at the random acts of brutal slapstick - - but I want I want to be LOL'ing, man! If that CUTICLE DETECTIVE werewolf nonsense felt like a comedy sketch that'd been stretched past its normal life, then this feels like one that keeps getting cut off before it can even set up its jokes properly.

I mean, seriously, I watched four episodes in under eight minutes. It’s almost like these videos are intended to be enjoyed while you were waiting for other video to finish buffering. What gives, man?

Dubbed by a translation staff who took a lot of creative license.Watch the first episode, "The Introduction of Asakura" here and decide for yourself.

Maybe you (and hell, me. I'm "old" too.) are just not seeing that the needs of a younger audience are being met here. There are lots of massive Youtube videos that aren't even 3 minutes long. Why waste resources on a 22 min show? You can pop this in, in the place of a commercial block.

Most anime airs ultra late at night and the producers actually have to pay the TV stations for the time slots. Back in my fansub days I'd come across a show without the commercials removed and they were always just what you'd expect: something directly related to the series or ultra shite (I think one was a good terrible used car dealership commercial). I've always assumed that these little mini shows are specifically made to replace those crap commercials. I doubt those commercials bring in much money at all so their loss is probably negligible. On the other hand, replacing them with a mini series that probably cost less than the price of one normal length episode probably seems like an ok risk to take so you won't lose that much money and on the bright end, maybe it will catch on and one or two thousand units or help boost up the sales of the manga and whatever other merchandise is available.

2 minute shorts... weird as fuck.

@sickVisionz: Is it kinda like the UK, when they lisence their TVs? What does a Japanese car dealership ad look like?

YotaruVegetaon Feb. 9, 2013 at 1:38 p.m.

@Marshal Victory: It's 2 minutes, at least. Also, what could they bring in a dub that's not already there. They're talking about this guy who's gay for his friend, and his other friend is talking about boobs all the time. The only thing a dub could bring is, I don't know, more curse words?

sickVisionz moderator on Feb. 9, 2013 at 3:36 p.m.

@YotaruVegeta: I always thought that the BBC was like a government supported thing that citizens actually pay taxes to support. Late night anime isn't like that, but if my interpretation of how the BBC works is wrong then maybe it is similar. As far as Japanese car ads, this was a used car dealership so it's low budget, shot at the dealership and people just acting goofy and dumb. Very much like how a US one would be.

YotaruVegetaon Feb. 9, 2013 at 5:38 p.m.

@sickVisionz: No, you're right about the BBC.

Marshal Victoryon Feb. 10, 2013 at 12:10 a.m.

@YotaruVegeta: Wait! Curse words do not add to a story? That would fall upon deaf ears in holyweird.Tho your right dubs probly wouldnt add much to the story. Its on my maybe see list .Duno just think whole shows not for me .

Also in Uk the lesence for tvs is another tax bascily as my friends their tell me.Tho it made me wonder would this show even be aired on PBS?im guessn no.

@Marshal Victory: It would be funny for public money to go into funding such a crass show.
