Because Japan is KNOWN for animation? What can you tell me about France's animation scene? The country has had one noteworthy project in the last ten years (The Secret of Kells) Anime was absolutely gigantic in its heyday, necessitating a word all it's own.
@AgentJ:
Japan is also known for robotics, video games and etc. Do we have special name for them? (No, we don't)
The US is also known for animation to (heck, without us there wouldn't be no anime as we know it). But no one give US animation a word (don't really have anything on France, it just pop into my mind)
@Destinyheroknight: Think about it the same way as "Fish and Chips". What the English consider chips is not the same as what folks in the States consider chips. Or "Soccer" vs "Football". Soccer originated as a nickname for "The Beautiful Game" before it became the only name in America. Good luck talking about the sport with the Sounders and Manchester United this weekend on this side of the Atlantic. And good luck telling people about the first-half kickoff return in the UK. It won't work.
In America, Anime means Japanese Animation. In America, Football is a sport that rarely really makes contact between foot and ball. In America, chips are something that come in a bag. These words all mean different things in other countries. But by your logic, chips are any fried potato.
@AgentJ:
And that call corruption, my dear sir
@Destinyheroknight: @Destinyheroknight: "And that call" ridiculous. Again, it is the evolution of language. You can use loaded language if you want, but that is how we have progressed, instead of saying "deep-fried potato wedges of what I assume is English origin".
@AgentJ:
So the evolution of language is to twist and corrupt the original meaning of a word (I say it mess up)
@Destinyheroknight: And you also seem to be saying that we should instead use the most basic words to communicate, like what I wrote above for chips. Or as they should be known, ""deeply-oiled potato wedges of what I assume is English origin""
You're welcome Sam, though you shouldn't feel that you need an excuse to talk about something on The Vice Pit, whatever topic you or Tom want to talk about we'll no doubt find the video entertaining.
Lets see, my favourite pony is Rainbow Dash, without a doubt. Pinkie Pie is up there as the funniest, easily, but Rainbow Dash is... a certain percentage cooler than the other ponies.
Is MLP an anime? No. Not to us, anyway. If you were to ask a Japanese person, I imagine they would say it is because "anime" essentially means "cartoon" over there; or so we're lead to believe, at least. To us in the US, UK, and so on, "anime" refers to Japanese cartoons specifically. Similarly, "hentai" means pornographic Japanese cartoons, but in Japan that word has an entirely different meaning. It has nothing to do with cartoons/anime over there at all.
Great video, and nice headphones!
For anyone interested I've set up a Friendship is Magic discussion thread on the forums, just click the button:
@Destinyheroknight: @AgentJ:
Guys, cool it. You clearly aren't getting through to each other. Destinyheroknight, you're correct in saying that in Japan, Friendship is Magic may be considered an anime. However, that's irrelevant to us because that's not how we use that word. You can call that "corruption" if you like, that's your own opinion. However, I find it silly that you're so upset about it when the English language is one of the biggest mash-ups of other languages in the world. To quote Wikipedia:
That's one of the ways the English language evolves, and has done for many, many years.
Now, if we can put this argument aside and focus on the actual article, I think we'd all appreciate it.
It's funny to me that people who say anything animated is anime don't also take issue that 100% of anime sites have incredibly skewed coverage that focuses on Japanese products like 99% of the time, almost as if there was a connection between anime and Japan.
Anime is from Japan my little pony is not from Japan
No. tho Rainbow Dash is awesome!
Hmm guess I missed out on that argument but either way. I have long passed got over that whole issue I just call cartoons or animation from other countries Japanese Animation, French Animation, Korean Animation and so on for any country. Either way I admit I am a Brony I edit the episode pages the day they air and will so. I am not crazed fan who goes all crazy with collecting material from this show as most of the Bronies do (No Offense). Either way this show has some Japanese Animation characteristic's and is accepted but some of the fandom communities. But I will be attending the Las Vegas MLP Convention and I will be wearing a Princess Luna shirt and my badge will have my screen name.
