Is a Live-Action Rurouni Kenshin Movie In Production?

Sources say J-drama and sentai action star Takeru Sato playing the lead role

 Am I the guilt-riddled pretty boy swordsman of your dreams?
The oft-salacious blog Sankaku Complex set aside their normal discussion of 2ch exhibitionists and the latest bonkers loli news (not a dig at the blog, I honestly love the place) to report today that, according to a Japanese studio insiders, not only is a live-action Rurouni Kenshin movie in the works, it's going to star Takeru Sato. The actor--barely 21-years-old and really making me feel my age--is best known for his roles as Yuya Okada in Rookies, the movie Goemon and the titular role in Kamen Rider Den-O, and has held a handful of other dramatic roles as well.

The news comes from Japanese blog Cyzo Woman (Japanese language page), which says that studios finds the CG technology advanced enough now to do justice to the source material. While I agree that the tech infrastructure is there for the film, I believe it was actually in place several years ago, making me wonder if this is really the reason studios have waited this long to propose a live-action film. You know what, I'm not going to get to cynical on this one and just be happy that this might be materializing now. While I don't think a movie at this late stage of the game would advance the broader story of Kenshin I do know that samurai period films are awesome and fans of the genre should all be rooting for this to be made.

I enjoyed Rurouni Kenshin, but after the non-acting in Casshern, I am cautiously optimistic about live action anime adaptations.

Not sure if I'm willing to see a anime to live action film but it is Rurouni Kenshin so I'm sure they will do good to it.

@metalsnakezero:  I'm sure Takeru will at least have Kenshin's role down, Now i finally get to hear his non-weak voice!! i hope

The guy in the photo looks pretty good for the role. Considering I liked the Death Note, 20th Century Boys, and Dororo movies, this has a decent chance of being decent.

As a fan of all things samurai I will be checking this out:)

This is almost the epitome of striking while the iron is dead cold. That series ended maybe ten years ago.

J-Dramas do aright side better then Hollywood in the live action department. Seems odd that they had to wait for technology for this series. At the heard of the story it's a samurai drama. I'm sure it could help for scenes, but I think they could of produced a decent movie version of the series without it. It was nearly ten years ago they were making the Star Wars prequels.

You know you can usually never go wrong with movies about anime done in Japan. And I'm liking this guy's look, so heck I'm all for it.

Why do I always feel comfortable about live-action anime films being developed in Japan? If Hollywood were to say that "we're making a live-action film based on Rurouni Kenshin," I would get a shiver chilling down my spine.

Oh dude! Takeru Sato was awesome as Ryotaro in Den-O! He'd be perfect for the role!

@BestChancethor: it is Shishio Makato.

I don't know what to say about this...

I haven't seen his work but that pics makes him look like some super soft model turned actor who's probably pretty horrible.  I'm not expecting anything from this.  The anime movie was enough to satisfy me.

The CGI comment inspired me to create the image shown in this post here:
