If SAMURAI FLAMENCO Isn't Gay, It'll be A Surprise

Episode #21 -- Watch & Learn. They're REALLY hinting at it.

Well… looks like my guess about the true nature of Gota and Masayoshi’s relationship last time was pretty much spot on. Even his manager quickly dismisses any possibility of her being a potential girlfriend for the gy. So, no points for guessing whom Samumenco is going to learn how to love, now, kids…

I never actually read it, but this plot turn makes me think of ENIGMA. That comic was notable for sub-textually/textually linking its superhero’s secret identity with his sexual identity; and having him gradually come to terms with being gay as he went on a metafictional self-exploration. Who knows if that particular book was ever on Studio Manglobe’s reading list but, between that and ANIMAL MAN, this series has really seemed like something that would’ve fit on Vertigo Comics’ early line of offbeat superheroic titles.

And it’s funny noticing this, so soon after watching the new TIGER & BUNNY movie. Both series are shot-calling plenty of American superhero comics, but the reference lists couldn’t be further afield.

It’s undeniable that Haiji has to be real, at this point. Unless everybody’s hallucinating, of course (recalling the disbelief tension level set by previous episodes, I suppose that’s certainly possible). Again, the show’s conditioned me to squint at every new character, trying to figure out what they represent.

In this episode, the kid comes right out and says that these outlandish plot details have been the result of Samumenco’s fragile mind being unable to cope with there not being a continual supply of super-villains to complete his wish. If my hunch proves right, and these final few episodes are about Masayoshi coming to terms with his feelings for Gota, then Haiji really starts looking like the voice of reality, intruding on this elaborate, boyish fantasy that Samumenco’s constructed to not face facts about himself.

Watch "Teaching Love" and decide for yourself, then read my comments about the previous episode.

I feel bad to admit this. I find it amusing that Haji started mocking Goto for chatting with his girlfriend. I can't figure out if Haji is real or not. He once compared himself with Goto's girlfriend at the river embankment. He was finally seen by 2 people other than Masayoshi, Joji and Goto. I'm going with ghost who is seeking attention by making Masayoshi's life terrible just like how Marshal compared Haji to the Joker.

I can't remember but one of the characters suggest to Masayoshi to date his manager, Sumi. I actually they had a chance. However, Masayoshi's relationship with Goto is pretty intense emotionally, even more than Kotetsu and Barnaby. Lots of bromance in this Power Ranger parody series.

Haha im not following samflam but the write up makes it seem like a gay fight club

@hitsusatsu11:

It's more about the bromance between the main character and his best friend. They have little fights, but they always made it up. It's more subtle and even Mari Maya joked in previous episodes that the two are too close and shipped them, if my memory is right.

  • Kick Ass
  • the new Lego Movie
  • Fight Club with Brad Pit

On-topic:

I feel it's a ghost more than hallucination since ghosts can blow up buildings and cut someone's hair as well as disappearing without a trace.

@takashichea: The movie American Physco features action scenes and explosions which may or may not be delusions.

Yeah just not seeing the "bromance" at all sorry. Specialy since Flaminco wants the girl idol to confront Goto as well so nah.

But Haiji is as real as the rest of the things that went on. Which means to me much of what went on may still not been real at all. An this is the final break down of his mind.Or rather the final coming to reality of his mind from what ever happened.

@takashichea: Haiji felt more like the Joker as he taunted Goto there to. Swear if he said dance with the devil in the pale moon light i would not have been surprised.

The whole subject of homosexuality in Samurai Flamenco needed to be dug deeper into, in my opinion. First we have Moe and Mari of MMM. Are they just gay for fun? Is Mari bisexual, or just heterosexual? Does Moe have true sexual feelings for Mari?

Then we get to the boys. Gota doesn't seem to be gay- just FUCKING MENTALLY BROKEN. Hazama is, uh, what now? He doesn't feel afraid to be naked in front of men nor boys. He proposes to get married to Gota, but it's kind of something that he blurts out in the moment. He has not been in any romantic relationship in the show. Could he just be a man-child with a (formerly) really nice apartment? Maybe he's asexual, eh?
