Hyakko
Hyakko
Talk about a weird report-- no one will be surprised that it comes from Sankaku Complex, I'm sure. Artefact claims that the makers of Hyakko, a so-so anime adaptation of a web comic that's been airing in October, are planning to sue fans or a fan who has repeatedly referred to the show as “crap” and “rubbish” on message boards. For slander.

...Well, I guess from a purely literal standpoint, no, Hyakko isn't actually poop or stuff from a garbage can. But the whole thing still sounds a little weird to me. Apparently the makers feel that this person (or these people) are on a campaign specifically to malign the show and destroy any shot it might have had at popularity.

Very weird.

This is just ridiculous. So no one has a right to have a opinion on this show? Are we living in a dictatorship or something?

Well, considering that this involves people in Japan, I'd say WE aren't living anywhere, since neither of us lives in Japan. It will be interesting to see if anything actually comes of this.

I'm pretty curious how this turns out, too. I have no idea how the Japanese legal system deals with libel and slander.
It definitely seems like an odd move, though.

What's with this "so-so" talk? Hyakko is amazing. Suing fans might be a little much though >_> Though can't really call them "fans" per-say....

As one not involved I can laugh at this.
I'm far too detached from such madness.

darkcyder: I enjoyed the first ep okay, but not enough to keep up on it.

Hyakko got much better after the first episode once they started introducing more characters and weren't just "oh, I'm lost, let's wander......"

Let me see if I can remember what I learned in that one business law class...

1. This would technically be libel and not slander as it is written and not spoken, unless message board postings are considered fleeting speech - which they likely are.

2. The staff would lose this case if they actually brought such a suit under American law but I believe Japan doesn't have the same sort of anti-libel protections of criticisms under free speech as many Western countries do. Still, they would have to prove those comments made a noticeable negative impact on their sales (the first DVD will be released on 1/23) or the studio's reputation, either of which would need to be measurable if they were to somehow seek financial damages. I think it's a poor move that gives the studio negative press and little positive benefit.

By the way, I found Hyakko to be funny (have only seen 4 episodes).

Heh, this is so ridiculous... it's occasional small things like this that remind me why I'm still happy on this side of the pond. *proceeds to sing "America! F*** YEAH!"*

Indeed. It started out so-so, but it turned out to be a great anime. I liked it very much, it was fun and reminded me a bit of the Persona games (guess because of the school setting). I was going to make a forum thread asking if anyone knew a good similar anime, but maybe I can do it here even though this thread is old?
