HUNTER X HUNTER #55-58 Ends "Yorknew" Less-Than-Excitingly

Episode #55-58 -- Watch & Learn. These kids don't even understand it.

To be fair, I suppose not every arc needs to conclude with some arch villain getting vanquished, or with the heroes being thrust into drastic life changes. Still, the way “Yorknew” more-or-less ends with the good guys reaching some irresolute treaty with the bad guys on a rainy afternoon makes these “goal posts,” as they were, seem rather arbitrary.

Hell, the announcer even breaks part of the deal between audience and crew when he hypes the next arc by actually calling it the start of a new arc.

One time on the Vice Pit, while I was voicing my disinterest in all the Vicious-centered ‘mythology’ episodes of COWBOY BEBOP, Sam posited that every mangaka has at least one yakuza story they want to tell someday, regardless of what else they do. Togashi pawed at underworld dealings (both literal and figurative) in YU YU HAKUSHO a few times; but he clearly got to scratch that itch in full here. I could’ve used a Hunterpedia to keep track of all the secret alliances tangling up together. At a certain point, I just gave up on trying to figure out who was double-crossing whom and just slapped a big post-it on it all that read “the Phantom Troupe squabbles internally.”

The most appealing parts had to be when the Troupe tries to rationally suss out their individual prophecies, and interrogate Hisoka on how he’s contributed to them. To me, these scenes represent what’s best and worst about a series going on long enough that it can afford to devote entire episodes to breaking down the semantics of its own lore.

On the good end, it really does add to the verisimilitude of the whole experience when you get to see these sorts of in-between moments which a standalone feature would have to skirt over. On the bad end, they remind me of what can bore me about an Asimov story - - when I feel like I'm getting a dry lesson on the Laws of Robotics (or Nen) instead of an entertaining narrative.

Anyway, I've slipped my quarter into the slot. Let's hit Start for "Greed Island!"

Watch "Allies × And × Lies" and "Beloved × And × Beleaguered” and "Initiative × And × Law" and "Signal × To × Retreat" decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode.

This arc had a great ending. Hisoka's face at the end was classic (different from the original series).

I wish more arcs ended without a clear resolution. Sometimes things don't work out as anticipated and sometimes things should end messy. Too many times do the "good guys" end up with everyone alive and the "bad guys" given their social punishment. Life isn't always so clear and that should be reflected more in the media.

One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach are good examples of shows where almost everything goes well for everybody. If someone is critically injured, don't worry there is a healer who can bring them back from the grave. Bad guy clearly has the advantage? Don't worry, the power of friendship will give us strength! Yeah, that's not how things actually work out.

Agreed Tom, the ending to this arc was far too "nudge and wink" for my taste, I guess if nothing else it was great to see Kurapika get some development, Also I don't think we have seen the last of the phantom troupe characters, Any way I hope Greed island is more than just another tournament arc, Because anti climax aside I thought Gangster X Gangster was nice change of pace, Also I laughed my ass off when Hisoka's SHWING! For the troupe leader was shot down in Stifiling disappointment, priceless!,

I thought i was the only one to feel that this ending was a little bit..should i say unfulfilling? i mean i like that it could possibly set up another arc later on...(if the author actually gets back to work that is..) but it was just something about the end of this arc that just made ya go "oh..that's it" not like in a truly disappointing way but in a kinda i expected a little more even if the ends don't get all the way tied up.

I here togashi isn't too um conclusive about his endings.I've yet to finish the chimera ant arc because i'm going with the anime but i heard it was kinda meh-ish. which is a suprise because things are def hot and heating up every episode so idk what to think..

@Lurkero: Agree with the ideal that more stories should end with out a nice neat red bow on it.

But I disagree on on Naruto that things almost always goes well tho. Naruto in shonen is more the unlucky goof than easy win button hero. Now filler wise you have a point in that series. Main story wise he loses teachers an friends an ends up geting hurt alot.

Also oddly enuff most consider Yorknew the better arch over Greed island. So if Yorknew seemed like "a dry lesson on the Laws of Robotics" umm Tom ya may not like the Greed Island arch at all. Actualy odds i wold say are agianst you liking it other than the high concept.

AH so you don't like hard science fiction? That explains so much. I love it. Asimov, Clark, two of my favorite authors of all time. Ok understand your taste a little bit better now and will be able to parse your reviews more easily. Very good.

Well said mate, totally agree with your comment there

@Marshal Victory: I agree with you. I did enjoy Yorknew all the way through, but Greed Island has to be my least favourite arc in HxH due to the saturation of exposition. I like supernatural elements, but I feel that a balance is needed for all areas, including confrontations and relaxation to get a completely satisfying experience.

@SpectroRaphael: For its high concept .. the game with in the game , I end up enjoying it for that. Then again parts of Greed Island reminds me of my old Magic the Gathering playing days to. It kinda feels like filler tho. But unlike filler it carries threw some of the over arching story fairly well I think.
