I recently made the life-changing move of removing myself out of my parents basement, and into an apartment. With that I also decided to change the appearance of my bedroom. Gone were the days of posters, now the time of the picture frame will reign. I soon realized that I should have done this earlier, a lot earlier. You too can have a bedroom that is both classy, and nerdy at the same time, and this is how.
Step One: Pick an Image
Posters for one reason or another have a lot of baggage attached to them; they either make you look like a little kid, or like a frat house. But once you put that poster into a frame, everything changes. However, good posters are hard to come by, and you can only find them in comic shops or conventions; and most of the time you have to pick one you might not necessarily like because it was the only one there. The real secret to all of this is to throw away buying pre-printed posters, and print your own!
First you have to find a high-definition image, and this is most important because it will look like crap when it’s printed if it isn’t high-definition. A good source for high-definition artwork is in anime art books, though finding a scan of them is sometimes difficult. What I think looks best are images that look as if they were painted, or have some kind of traditional artistic look to them.
Step Two: Choose a Frame
Most internet printing places will frame the picture for you, but it is expensive as hell. A cheap alternative is to buy a frame at an arts and craft store, like Michaels for example. Buy the frame first, so that you know what size picture would look good in your room, and also what size you should print the picture so that it will fit into the frame. You can not skip this step, a frame adds so much class to a simple picture; it may be even more important than the picture itself.
Step Three: Print it Baby
Of course I’m not talking about printing it yourself with your printer at home, unless of course you have some kind of awesome printing press in your house. What I’m talking about is uploading your image to one of many different online printing houses that will print it for you. The service I used was called Mpix, who printed the images and had them to my door in only a couple days. Now there are many options on what medium you want it printed on, from regular photo paper, to metallic paper (awesome), to even canvas; there are a lot of options available, depending on how much you want to spend.
Step Four: ?????
While you wait for your picture to be shipped to you I recommend you play video games, or watch Gintama, or drive down to your local home improvement store and buy some hooks specifically made to hang pictures. They are easy to install, and you don’t have to nail unto the studs in order to hang your picture, which is very convenient.
Step Five: Profit!
Put the picture in the frame, hang it on the wall, and wait for members of the opposite sex to flock into your new super classy bedroom. Below are a bunch of images I wanted to make into posters, but haven’t had the opportunity yet. Here is a .rar of them all, with all of them in high-definition, ready for printing. Let us start the frame revolution here, for we will no longer hang posters in our bedrooms naked! Promise me brothers and sisters, for this is our new rule for the rest of eternity!

If I were to do this I would use this picture:

Good article. It has always blown my mind how even a simple black bordered frame can make even the strongest virginity shields look classy. I cant begin to count the number of times i have walked by the poster stand at a store and thought "HOLY SHIT THAT POSTER LOOKS AWESOME! I GOTTA BUY TH... Oh wait... I'm not twelve anymore...fuck"
When i was in college, when Star Wars Episode 3 was coming out, i found these two kick ass posters that where one image split in two that you would put side by side. However having two posters on my wall just looked bad because there was literally nothing else in my room besides them. I wish i had the money at the time to get them framed liked i wanted to.
How much was it to get the photo printed at that site? I'm too lazy to sign up to find out.
Unfortunately frames go a bit beyond my willing-to-pay for budget, so down the line...
I try to use a frame when possible. Currently, my room has two framed images (Dark Horse 20 Years of Manga and The Incredible Hulk movie poster). Couple of others are off to the side, waiting on frames.
Curiously, what are your thoughts on wall scrolls? I prefer wall scrolls over regular posters on their own because of their durability, but I put framed posters and images over wall scrolls.
But taking a scan from internet and printing it out in poster format without anything extra is only €5.00 i`d rather do that.
The RX-78-2 with the damaged shield looks awesome i`d like that poster, and the Musha one too :D
EDIT: YEEEAAAHHH!! Len, you have good taste my friend! I couldn't help but notice a certain movie poster artwork that made it in your collection rar! Also the Touhou ones are quite incredible.
Another option is to purchase really nice quality posters printed on a heavy, sort of linen type paper; I've seen a variety of anime posters in this style. I bought two Ah My Goddess posters of this sort at OhayoCon last year for $20 a piece. They're very large and beautiful and numbered too boot (I think they're collector's items but not sure). Framing them was kind of expensive because they were so large it had to be custom. It cost $88 to frame one; but that includes high quality wood (cherry) and glass. Places like Hobby Lobby and Michael always have framing 50% off, and sometimes in the paper there's ads for 60% off custom framing.
Edit: I learned the correct term for fancy posters like these are lithographs--least I think so.
Cool article otherwise. Framing is definitely the way to go but it just doesn't seem worth the while for something you print out yourself, for me. If I go through the trouble to put it up on my wall I try to make sure it's legit artwork in the first place.
A manly way to hang manly pics in one's manly room...
Well done, my man!
I've made some drawings that I would like have made into a poster.
