I usually tell haters to f**k off, but that's just me.

How many MTV reality TV shows did you reference in this one?

I often recommend BLACK LAGOON or FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST BROTHERHOOD to people who are curious about anime. You could also go with some movies such as SUMMER WARS.

ONE PIECE is such a great adventure series, but hard to suggest to someone to try since it's just so large. It makes it hard to tell people where they can jump in.

Are you talking about hentai or ecchi? There are differences. Hentai is full on porn, but ecchi is suggestive. STRIKE WITCHES would be defined as ecchi. Though, you can see ecchi qualities in nearly all mainstream comics. Look at how many women in comics have skin tight outfits that all show off the cleavage of their DD or larger breasts. They have shower scenes and their clothes often get ripped in ways that barely don't show anything. How often do you ever see Catwoman with her costume zipped up?

I find people often don't give anime or manga a chance partly becasue it isn't doing some things better than what they're already watching/reading.

I kinda gave up on trying to make other people anime fans, it's just too exhausting......

as they say, HATERS GONA HATE

but that's okay, the last thing I want is for anime to gain mainstream popularity, nothing good ever comes out of that, I mean just look at the game industry lately,

that being said I really, really feel very sorry for people who live in a world with out anime,

in fact if that world was a place and that place were some kind of strange foreign land, I think such a place would be called GENERICA,

I usually just ignore them but I don't run into them in real life. I started watching anime in college and never experienced being an anime fan in high school or middle school where people make it their job to try and ruin someone's life on a daily basis. Also helps that everyone I knew was either into, mildly aware of it and could identify shows, or completely unaware and only knew of it as, "those cartoons where people be fucking?" Helps too that while I push shows on to folk, I never try to push people into the medium.

To be honest, I just try to ignore the haters who poke fun at me for watching "kiddy" shows just because I love both anime and manga. I used to argue back at them that what I was watching (at the time, FMA: Brotherhood, One Piece, BLEACH, and Beelzebub) was totally different from the Pokemon/Digimon/Tokyo Mew Mew (Mew Mew Power from 4Kids) that they assumed was the type of shows that I watch. It just gets so frustrating when others (who already have a strong disliking of anime in general or assume that it is nothing but hentai-based) bash you for enjoying anime.

Take my family, for example. My dad thinks of anime as kid-based shows that you see on Saturday mornings for kids between the ages of 6-10, while my mother thinks that nearly ALL anime must be hentai-related or just adult (18+) in nature. It probably didn't help when she stumbled across one of my iMac folders that had the pages for Maid Bride in it (stored all pages so I could check my wiki work to ensure that what I was working on was as close to 100% accurate as possible.

As they say, ignorant people just never learn. That is why I ignore them and go on with enjoying the anime and manga that I watch/read.

I'm such a sucker for Randy Savage impressions. I request one short outburst of Macho Madness in every Vice Pit from here on out.

As for dealing with any detractors of anime, I just feel it's best to ignore them. Surrounding yourself with negativity is never a good thing, and most of the time it can easily be avoided. I got into anime when I started middle school and until I got out of high school, and I never really expressed my passion for it. Quite frankly, it's nobody else's business how I spend my free time. I mean, if I was asked what I did in my free time, I wouldn't be a jerk and tell them to get lost. I was just careful about who I told. The more I could avoid any sort of ridicule, the better. Not that I'm some sort of fragile flower or anything.

This is just my personal experience with how I dealt with it. I tried the whole "give them X, Y, and Z examples" when I would talk to people about what music I liked. Apparently, liking hard rock and heavy metal made me a satanist. I'm just glad that I am out of high school because no one really cares about stupid stuff like that anymore. I have my friends who like anime, and I have my friends who don't like it. I think now it's getting to the point where no one is going to make a fuss about it.

    SamJazon April 10, 2013 at 5:22 a.m.

I think one of the funnest experiences I had with anime was when I was talking to the guy next to me in school, we were talking about working out or something, I mentioned I wanted to learn Muai Thai. Turns out, he was going to a Muai Thai gym near my house. Freaking sweet. He asks why I wanted to learn Muai Thai, I bring up History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi. His jaw drops, and turns out that's why he picked up Muai Thai in the first place.

Still good mates today, going on about Terraformers and Fullmetal Alchemist.

But I've also had experiences where I've explained the synopsis of an anime show to another friend, neglected to mention that it was anime, they've been stoked to watch it, we watch the pilot of, say, Death Note, together, and then friend says "You know, I would be really into this show, but I just can't take it seriously because it's a cartoon. And I'm annoyed that I can't take it seriously because this looks like a really good show that I would actually enjoy otherwise."

Anyways, point is. Anime is just like any other show. Walking Dead is just like Highschool of the Dead, only with less nudity, and that's saying something. Some people can take the story seriously when it's animated, other people can't. Fair enough. Same end, I don't take professional sports seriously. A lot of it is, like you said, misconceptions and bigotry, so the trick, I find, is just to level with them, get them talking about stuff they're into and, after a few minutes, explain that while you have no idea about said interest (Say, lacrosse), you're not going to tear it down by your misconceptions that it's a girl's sport or it's for those who never made the rugby team. Generally, once that threshold of 'We know just as little about each others interest as the other, so let's not tear each other down', has been breached, then understanding can happen.

Alternatively, once they're talking about baseball, I just start asking them about stuff I remember hearing about in Major or Tohru Adachi's works. We get a sensible conversation of Baseball going and they ask "Wait, how the hell do you know so much about baseball? I thought you sat at home watching japanese cartoons all day?", then they're interested in clearing up they're misconceptions.

And sometimes I get rocks thrown at me. No biggie.

    Rocks? Seriously? For what reason?

    SamJazon April 10, 2013 at 12:27 p.m.

@parasyteFMA: No, not seriously. That was a joke. I was bullied for completely different reasons, but let's not get into those days. Adult life is so much more pleasant.

    parasyteFMAon April 10, 2013 at 12:38 p.m.

@SamJaz: Good. I was about to say...

But yes. Adult life is worlds better than being a kid.

With the amount of fanservice in today's anime, their point that assuming all that anime is is hentai is justified.

I wouldn't be mad with someone who claims that anime is hentai. I know my anime enough to agree with their point.
