Talking about computers and animation, I think computer stuff looks great as long as it's not used to take shortcuts. I think a lot of old shows had the good sense to know that if they couldn't do it well then they just wouldn't do it. Today, they'd just use computers even if it ended up looking like crap. Motion tweens are the main thing that bothers me. When it looks like it's just an animated gif sliding around the screen on a preset line, that stuff is terrible. I also hate when they use super non-subtle blurs during combat. An example would be Dragon Ball Kai. Sometimes they would use the old animation durng a high speed fight and you could see every individual attack. It was crazy and hectic, but you could see it all. Other times they would redo a high speed attack and it was all blurred out so that you get the sense that it's fast but you can't actually see what going. I think that was done solely to save time in drawing in so they could animate less frames since it was going to be a blurry mess in the end anyways.

When it's computers mainly used for coloring and there is actually hand animation going on, it can be a glorious sight to behold. Basically every well animated scene post 1999 is a good example of this.

Anyways, funny video. Nostalgia is a hell of a thing. I don't usually rewatch stuff for story since I already know exactly what's going to happen and how, but sometimes I've tried it for anime that I loved and I scratch my head trying to figure out what I liked about this. I think a lot of it is only good because I was younger and because I was new to anime so everything was unique, fresh, and extremely different than all of the western style media I'd seen up to that time.

I feel that Tom expects too much logic from some of these shows. Trigun was already from a odd world so how you not expected some weirdness.

Yeah, a lot of shows use CG in a lot of bad places and it start to question why they use it in the first place.

yea, CG looks wonky in anime. Initial D comes to mind, and a few instances in Sket Dance. it's a lot better in the latter, but still noticeable. also, speaking of CG animation, have a look at this.

I think I've seen that sort of 2D-to-3D models in games like iDOLM@STER, and I felt that it still looked off. It's definitely a step up from the 3D renders in most anime today, though.

Speaking of 3D models replacing characters in anime, I wonder why companies like CyberConnect2 haven't stepped in and either worked on that 3D animation or just make a show with 3D models. This is especially intriguing, due to CC2's previous titles, such as the Naruto Storm games and Asura's Wrath.

@metalsnakezero: Yes I know he want to much reaistic w=quality and all anime can't give it too ya. I just recently watched Trigun and i loved it. I mean come on the two main charaters are great and when it get serious they do it in a way that is cool

@Dekken: Thanks man! We enjoy doing them.

Regarding the topic, I was kinda hoping to get into a more plot and execution driven conversation rather than focus on the visual asethitics. Like, "why are we seeing more moe?" "have certain genres disappeared or changed?" "what stories are anime telling NOW as opposed to THEN and WHY?"

To me, I think those are some pertinent questions... but going back and forth about Trigun was pretty entertaining too. I am starting to get a little concerned that people think all Tom and I talk about is anime before 2001 har har har

...Looks like I might need to ask Tom to do a little Part 2 to this question :)

That's what I thought this was going to be about.

I don't really like much anime that is older (pre-2002). Many of them are just really strange on comparison to series that have been coming out and what I've been watching.

Based on Fumikane Shimade's "Mecha Musume" illustrations, the series revolves around moe girls who are anthropomorphic WWII-era planes.
