Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata's Take on Pippi

A Miyazaki Pippi movie? Um...could they try again?

Missed it, but thankfully AICN Anime picked this up: Pippi Longstocking was one of my favorite movies as a kid, and apparently in the 1970s Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata started pre-production on a Pippi Longstocking movie, launching Miyazaki on his first trip abroad-- to see author Astrid Lindgren and get her permission to create the film.

Unfortunately, they weren't able to get permission and the project was cancelled...but Ghibli World has a gallery of imageboards created by Miyazaki-sensei for the film, and I have to say, they're absolutely adorable. I really wish the film could have been made, and I wonder why they couldn't work out the permission issue? Maybe Miyazaki just wasn't well-known enough then...

I've reproduced one set of images here, but you should head over to Ghibli World and check out the other two sets.

What do you think? Would you like to see this movie?

Dig Deeper into Hayao Miyazaki

One of the most widely-recognized anime directors in Japan and probably the most well-known outside of Japan, Hayao Miyazaki is known for his whimsical films, created by the animation studio he co-founded, Studio Ghibli.
