So much that can be said...but I'll reign myself in for now since preparing lessons plans for 11th graders take priority over nerding out to Gundam lore.
What made Gundam such an attractive show, mecha designs aside, was very much the world it was placed in. The main protagonists evolved dramatically over the the original Gundam and the subsequent Zeta and Char's Counter Attack (ZZ doesn't exist, damnit). We saw the evolution of the ideologies of both Federation and Zeon as well as the constant rivalry between Amuro and Char, whose almost friend like dynamic outside of the cockpit makes the ultimate reveal of Char's true character in CCA all the more tragic. (Char: best anime character, period.)
I would be remiss to not mention that despite the Principality of Zeon troops were largely cartoon enemies in the original series, even then, they were led by one of the most charismatic Hitler stand-ins in anime.
Sam, fyi, SEED was originally intended to be a reboot of the original Gundam, and you can see quite a few similarities in terms of plot and character archetypes between it and the '79 show. However, many consider it to to be the progenitors of many of the rather terrible trends that has become a staple of Gundam shows (dull, beam-spamming combat, and insufferable pilots that preach pacifism while standing as the pinnacle of human military might).
Also no mentions of Gundam X or Turn A? I am disappointed.
@Turambar: Thank you for dropping some science, man. I WOULD have mentioned some Turn A Gundam but doing so means extending this discussion by a million percent.

Stardust Memories certainly has my favorite Gundam on lock with the GP-03 Dendrobium Orchis. However, my favorite show is split between the two better superior OVAs, 08th MS Team and War In the Pocket. 08th was the only one to instill some true realism into the franchise. War in the Pocket on the other hand is the only entry in the franchise to break the eternal paradox of the Gundam plot: protesting war while glorifying killing machines, and deserves to be called "Anti-War".
Gundam Unicorn definitely speaks to me uniquely as someone that gets the history its carrying with it as well as all the references and fan service designed for someone that was absorbed by the U.C. timeline, but I feel like I can see where Banagher's ultimate fate lies, and it'll fill me with mixed feelings most likely.
Also, too hell with the guilty pleasure, the east burns red regardless.

@Turambar: Liking Char's Counter Attack and Gundam Unicorn but denying ZZ's existence is very hypocritical since Unicorn refers to ZZ more than anything else does and the events of Char's Counter Attack wouldn't have happened if it were not for the events of ZZ.
