Grand Theft Auto's Anime: Are We Offended?

... ... ...

So, you may have caught this on Giant Bomb or on Gia's Second Shot, if you haven't... watch away.

The evolution of one of those "GTA radio blurbs," Princess Robot Bubblegum is one of those segments turned into a TV that began in GTA 4. I mean, I remember sitting through Republican Space Rangers and giggling a little, but I have to ask... Are we offended by this?

I know I really shouldn't be, but I kind of am. Granted, I've bought them, but the attempt to make the games more mature and thought provoking, while continuing this sensational based crass humor just irks me and makes it harder to enjoy.

lmao thats brilliant
king_mon Oct. 27, 2009 at 2:10 p.m.
well it is really stupid and really this just a stereotype
ThePsychoGameron Oct. 27, 2009 at 2:13 p.m.
actually im pretty amused by this, as for GTA, ive found it did a good job of keeping a lot of this humor is side quests so it never really got in the way, and the humor also help the game after doing a batch of story missions
reinon Oct. 27, 2009 at 2:16 p.m.
i don't exactly get what is offensive about this, it sounds like the plot to quite a few anime (to be perfectly honest, i would watch it if it was real)
Lance_McCloudon Oct. 27, 2009 at 2:17 p.m.
I'm a bit torn as well. this trailer was hilarious, but it does nothing for those that dont know much about anime and jsut further stagnate their idea that all there is has to be some combination or robots, explosions and boobs. Thats what really makes it seem like a bummer to me, as those people will miss the really awesome and unique things out there, like Ghost in the Shell, Monster and so on. I really found this trailer funny though, probably more so then most because I watch a lot of anime. As a parody it works really well, there is a ton of silly and ridiculous stuff around very close to whats in this trailer, just not as over the top most of the time. Overall I'm not offended, but it doesn't really help anime become more popular as it will just reinforce stereotypes and it doesnt show of the strengths of the medium at all either.

Doesn't seem to fit that well with the new GTA style either, but I haven't played much of GTA4 so I shouldn't comment on that part I guess.

I'll just copy my comment from Giant Bomb

"Genius. Any anime fan that can't laugh at this has a huge stick up their ass. Though of course any non-fan who honestly thinks this represents the quality of anime as a whole (a number of which I've seen in the comments) clearly doesn't know what the term 'parody' means. Massive thumbs up to Rock Star."

Not really, I was counting all the cliché that was in that clip. I think that the only one that missing is that she not going to school.
Well it going along the line of Halo parody "Republic Space Marine" and  "Weazel News".

I'd watch an episode. Looks funny.

In all honesty, i didn't really find this funny.
YotaruVegetaon Oct. 27, 2009 at 2:48 p.m.
What are you "offended" by? A big video game actually aknowledging that anime exists or not only lampooning anime, but also the public perception of anime. Really, what are you offended about? You do have a sense of humor- especially about yourself- don't you?

You could not like this, because comedy is not universally funny across all individuals, but if you're "mad" or "offended" by this goof, then what other silly crap are you "offended" by? Can you tell that I'm tired of people being offended by every little thing?

I would follow this conversation, but there is no feature for that on this site, which is a shame.
John_Martoneon Oct. 27, 2009 at 2:52 p.m.
It was amusing to me, and I giggled, but my biggest complain is in where it lies. Grand Theft Auto isn't known for being a particularly intelligent format, though I'll venture that it has an amazingly large consumer base.

Not saying this is what we define as "potty humor" but its pretty much valueless sensationalism that makes us giggle at funny things, without necessarily being funny in any intelligent way. This is fine, but I feel that the Grand Theft Auto games as a whole have been attempting to evolving into something other than a random, happy go lucky world simulator where hooker's blood flows like water.

This has probably more to do with how blah I was with Niko's (the character, not the Vice User) journey to both condemn the behaviors of the world, while being ignorant of how hypocritical he was (killing people indiscriminately himself.)

The more serious the series takes itself... the more work it puts into actor budgets, script writing, huge licensed sountracks... the more I feel like its nowhere near the mark the early games hit, and that this humor is 10x more about gimmick than a proper fit with its current style.

I'd like a feature like that too. In lieu of one, I'll respond to your comment so you get a private message to notify you of this reply. ;)

It really is *tries to find something to throw at ethan*
But yeah, I'm more annoyed than anything, and I'll yield, but its not humor that we haven't seen 500x before, and the Grand Theft Auto license lost its ability to be blunt and silly about the same time as Niko began prattling about how empty the American dream is...
HeeroYuyon Oct. 27, 2009 at 3:04 p.m.
Offended? No, not really; only wimpy liberals get offended, and only idiots assume blatant stereotypes are accurate. Real people just get angry and then move on since it's not worth their time.

My thoughts on this particular video? Whatd'ya know, another bunch of video gamers (or rather, game creators) using the stereotype of "all anime is porn and  tentacles"... wooo.... also, seriously, what the hell does this have anything to do with GTA? This can't even be classified as a gimmick at this point, this is just stupid.
eldiaxon Oct. 27, 2009 at 3:48 p.m.
@NoDeath: Well said, I agree completely.

When I first seen it, I was laughing my ass off.  This game is going to be great.
