There's been a lot of speculation that anime studio Gonzo is dead in the water, as reports of stock divesting, acquisitions, and a lack of any new anime series continued to trickle out. But the company's not 100% out of the game just yet: a new promo for Gonzo Rosso game Arcadia Saga has begun running on Famitsu's site, and it was animated by Gonzo.
It's hard to say what to take from this, so here's a little context. The game is being created by Gonzo Rosso, which USED to be part of the larger GDH company until it divested itself of the company, leaving it independent of GDH, leading Atlus to buy a majority share in the company.
So, Gonzo did animation for a game by its former sister company. Given how long game development takes, this is something that might have already been written into the plan, and was simply not changed when Gonzo Rosso was let loose for simplicity's sake-- or it could even have been animated a while ago and only now released. In these cases, it doesn't mean much of anything for Gonzo's future as an animation studio.
On the other hand, if you prefer to be optimistic, it could be GDH's way of saying, "look, we're still here. Just hold your horses while we put our s@%$ in order and we'll get back to making bizarre adaptations of classical literature and whatever moe stuff we can get paid to do."
Only time will tell. What are you thinking?
