RANMA ½ is a series I haven’t thought of in many a moon, but apparently a two-part live-action adaptation is coming to Japanese TV next month. Crunchyroll’s got publicity photos of, well, basically the entire cast and we’ve brought them down here for your scrutiny…

Anybody else getting some odd amusement out of how Ranma’s whole gender-swapping deal has become a Bill-Bixby-to-Lou-Ferrigno Hulk transformation? I guess the alternative would be a guy or a gal jumping in or out of drag depending on the water temperature but, still, my visualization of the gender switcheroo looks a lot like this.

I initially figured that all of you lunatics would be thoroughly familiar with this show but sometimes this community runs a little younger than I’m thinking and it has been a long time since this has been on the air. All you've got to know about RANMA 1/2 is that it's about this young kung fu stud who's (comically) cursed to change into a girl whenever he touches cold water. You can probably imagine all the light 'n funny hijinks that ensued over the show's seven seasons because of those regular swaps.

Whether you're familiar with the show or not, what do you lunatics think of these pics?

Where the hell is Ryoga?

WAIT WHAT

Ranma 1/2 was one of my first anime loves, all the way back 11 years ago. I didn't even know this was a thing. Maybe if it proves popular, and since remaking stuff is in right now, we can get another anime series that will actually include stuff like the Saffron arc and the stuff with Herb and his crew..

But I don't know how I feel about this live-action. I tried watching the live actions of Negima, Moyashimon and Yankee-kun and Megane-chan and didn't care for any of them except YaM, which I never finished.

Also why is Gosunkugi there and not Ryoga?

Destinyheroknighton Oct. 24, 2011 at 8:18 p.m.

I don't want Live-action Ranma 1/2 (what about finishing the anime) This make me dislike Inu Yasha more (for some reason)

Hailinelon Oct. 24, 2011 at 9:05 p.m.

The idea of a live-action Ranma entertains me, and I hope this turns out well. I'd love to see this!

Actually, cold water turns Ranma into a girl, hot water changes him back.

I am also disappointed by the lack of Ryoga, and the other recurring characters like Mousse and Shampoo.

Wraithon Oct. 24, 2011 at 9:17 p.m.

Not sure how to feel about a live action Ranma. Ranma 1/2 was the first manga I've ecer read, never seen the anime.

Hey Tom, you got some of your info wrong. Ranma turns into a girl with cold water; he needs hot water to turn back into a guy

AlwaysBeClothingon Oct. 24, 2011 at 9:18 p.m.

Oh wow, this is crazy, I wonder how they will handle all the animal stuff. I may have to watch this, just for nostalgia's sake. What would be next, Lum?

Ranma711on Oct. 24, 2011 at 9:22 p.m.

Just a correction, it's cold water that turns him into a girl and hot water that turns him back. More chances of getting wet with cold than there is with hot; example is old lady washing her sidewalk or rain coming down without notice.

And the most epic game of tag the world's ever seen? Actually, that might not be too bad...

And I want to see the Panda transformation in a live-action format. That alone might be worth it for me to see.

Chris2KLeeon Oct. 24, 2011 at 9:42 p.m.

I remember that when I was watching this series, I always wondered what a live-action version would look like. This is about as goofy looking as I imagined. Can we just bring the anime back?

Whoa

Eyzon Oct. 25, 2011 at 1:51 a.m.

AWESOME!!

I loved Ranma^^

Hope this is as fun and good as the live GTO (movie and series) or not dark and silly as the Yatterman or Casshern movie..

sickVisionz moderator on Oct. 25, 2011 at 3:52 a.m.

I'm not familiar with the series but I do remember there being SNES fighting games (or at least I assumed they were fighting games) based off the series advertised in EGM when I was growing up. I can't say much about it, but those pics make it seem 50x better than the awesomely terrible Taiwanese live-action Hayate no Gotoku

Halberdierv2on Oct. 25, 2011 at 5:15 a.m.

wow. this will be truly interesting. should we get a page running for this?

Fixed.

Ranma 1/2 should also be notable for bening ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS.

I don't think I've ever encountered an anime that is this funny since watching Ranma. The problem,t hough, is it's very much character based humor which is fresh and funny, but only once you've invested the time in learning the characters. Kind of like Friends.

Also, when Ranma gets wet he turns in the form of the girl who drowned in the spring. Not just a girl version of himself. It makes perfect sense for it to be an entirely separate actress.

Not to mention that Ranma in the anime had a separate actor and actress for the different genders, and Ranma's physical differences between forms (female Ranma is smaller, not as physically strong, etc.) that dressing the male actor up as a girl really wouldn't make much sense.

This might be a bit blasphamous around here, but I found Ramna 1/2 to be the weakest of the four major Rumiko Takahashi works to be adapted to anime. This problem I have with Ramna is the lack of emotional progress between the characters over the course of the 160+ episode show run. I much preferred Urusei Yatsura and Maison Ikkoku. I enjoyed InuYasha more, too although I agree it did run a bit too long. Having said that, none of those would make for really good live-action in my opinion, so this could work. Sadly, from what I read, this is only a special. I hope it does well, though so the producers might add my favorite character from the series, Shampoo.

I never really got into Inuyasha at all. Of Takahashi's animated series, I think that the most natural fit of any of them would be Maison Ikkoku since, as slapsticky as it is, it's the most grounded of the four in a lot of ways. Though, then it wouldn't necessarily have the visual flair of Urusei Yatsura or Ranma.

Well, I haven't seen it yet (nor am I ever likely to) but they did make a live-action Maison Ikkoku film back in 1986. It would have been released before Takahashi actually finished the manga, so that would have been a problem. I have a hard time picturing this one live because the story took place over 4-1/2 to 5 years. Ranma still seems the most adaptable of the four since most episodes are self-contained and there are no demons or flying bikini-clad aliens to worry about...although...hmmm.
