Anime Vice News

The spring show that's better than ATTACK ON TITAN.

I’m always in a bit of quandary when it comes to doing episode-by-episode write-ups on shows that are still running. Honestly, I prefer to watch the shows in bigger chunks, instead of week-to-week; and since there are only five episodes to date, I’m going to run out of GARGANTIA’s pretty fast.

Still… the show had a hell of a pilot and, since I feel obligated to be commenting on this season’s big darling ATTACK ON TITAN, I’d rather talk about the show I prefer first. So, here we are.

Anyway, with MADOKA MAGICA and PSYCHO-PASS under his belt (though, I’ll ignore the dreary PHANTOM), Gen Urobuchi’s quickly become the #1 talent I look out for in anime. He’s the story editor on this and, even though each episode after the pilot has been scripted by a different writer, it’s probably more effective to just infer his narrative sensibilities here.

It doesn’t seem to be a deconstructionist effort on the order of his previous shows, but it has put a shockingly sharp spin on a familiar set-up. Really, GARGANTIA feels like a GUNDAM crash-landed into one of the Miyazaki action-fantasies with a little more blood in their teeth (like NAUSICAA and MONONOKE). I don’t what it is, precisely, about the execution that makes this set-up work so well when it could so easily seem jarring, so perhaps it’s just a matter of the little touches.

Maybe it’s too much about subtly, at times, actually. Somebody on the crew should have seriously realized that our alien pilot Ledo should be speaking in some made-up alien language with sub-titles. Instead, we’ve got these characters all speaking in the same language on-screen, and continually talking about how they can’t understand each other. It gets confusing in this sub - - even when the characters are all speaking in language I can’t understand anyway!

Watch this episode, “The Planet of Origin" here and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode here.

This series feels fresh and interesting.... I'm really enjoying it....

I've been watching Gargantia and although it is a decent watch I don't really see where the series is going.

In regards to watching shows for the blog, why not pick 5-7 shows and update them weekly? One show for each day.

There's that or my suggestion of Hunter x Hunter is still open.

There is a Hunter X Hunter Discussion. I haven't watch the anime, but I'm still promoting the discussion threads.

Yeah, it's hard to say where is the plot going in the series. It was a challenge for me to recommend the anime series because of the vague plot. All I could say if you like Fate Zero and Madoka, Gen Urobuchi is doing Gargantia. If you know Gen Urobuchi, there is going to be something surprising in this one. That is what I used in my recommendations.

Gargantia is pretty slow. It's building up the relationships between Ledo and the inhabitants as well as introducing their way of life on the Gargantia Fleet. Sometimes, I want the series to pick up the pace.

At Tom Pinchuk: Ledo is speaking in German. I didn't catch it either.

Cool! Did you know there is a Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet Discussion right here in the community?

In comparison to Attack on Titan, Attack on Titan is more exciting, violent, dark, and fast paced. Also, Attack on Titan does not use any fan service. When you guys get to Gargantia episodes 3, 5, and 6, you will see the fan service.

Ehh opions vary an such but better is debatable.Tho i do expect a dark turn on Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet .

Also some talked bout the female delivery girl wearing to much blush was it? Umm then shes putting it on her shoulders to?Hehe its just from where shes in the sun so much. But they have puled the required beach party episode tho.So cheese cake was served.

Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet is a fine show even if it doesnt take a darker turn.Animation is good to great an world build was done fairly fast an painless.I dont feel this is the "desconstruct" as much as a mash of two or more themes.

My reasoning for a dark turn i cant give out unless as spoilers .

We start off with a bloody war, then world build with a almost comical war. Then more world build so plot pattern would be back to bloody war of some sort.

I hope you do go back on Attack on Titan since it just got to a really tension moment in the story.

takashichea moderator on May 15, 2013 at 3:34 p.m.

@Marshal Victory:

It's Hanaharu Naruko's style to put blush on characters to make them look cute such as Kamichu! and other NSFW works. Though, she adds a lot more blush on these gals than her previous works.

I'm with you there in expecting a dark twist. I think we get some kind of hint in episode 4, but we can't discuss it here. Meet me there at the discussion thread.

Just can't satisfy the audience, huh? You're an English speaker. What do you want Gargantia to do about that?

Way more often than not, a TV show would just have all these people speaking the same exact language. I'm glad they even put thought into this guy being a total fish out of water, and he needs to gradually learn the language to properly communicate.

@takashichea: I hate the "blush" or whatever it's called (I called it "marbling, since it makes cleavage look like marbles were stuffed into a shirt. )

AURON570on May 15, 2013 at 6:58 p.m.

I dropped this after the beach party episode.

Marshal Victoryon May 15, 2013 at 7:48 p.m.

@takashichea: Sure but you dont put blush on shoulders.Have seen sun burn like that an i have seen people that get red in the cheecks like that to.Tho not from being embarrised just by runing or working .

Also just because it ma have came from adult stuff doenst mean it aplies here in this case to. Not all members of the show are like this. But from what i have seen those who are out in the sun more are.

@YotaruVegeta: Ya actualy the alien language barrier is as anoying here as the fax one in The Devil is a Part-Timer! it not jsut the language barrier its sound actualy. Generaly by tone i can understand the emotion of what im reading thats being said. With both shows here for a while it takes me out fo the show .Not imersion as it should be .

YotaruVegetaon May 17, 2013 at 9:37 a.m.

@Marshal Victory: Devil is a Part-Timer got rid of that language barrier very quick. I don't share your annoyance with the language, and if you've kept up with it, Gargantia is slowly working towards Ledo speaking more fluent Japanese.

Marshal Victoryon May 17, 2013 at 10:04 a.m.

@YotaruVegeta: i have kept up with both it was just a pita at 1st. The Devil is a Part-Timer! tho later on does do the alt language thing again .Times like that id be better off haveing the sound off every thing seems read flat an lifeless any way.Im saying its anoying for me an aprently not only me.

Now oddly enuff its the made up languages that are bothersme. Say like on detective conan characters switch to speeking english it doesnt bother me .I can stil follow the tone even tho its not spoken fluidly. Also f i recall right Night Raid 1931 had a part at the start of the series many hated because one of main characters spoke mandrin an it threw people off.

sickVisionz moderator on May 19, 2013 at 2:08 p.m.

I started watching this and Titan over the weekend and while Titan is more badass and awesomely violent, I'm enjoying this one more. The main girl and tone remind me of Real Drive (a criminally under the radar series) mixed with Xam'd: Lost Memories.

I really love the final shot of the main girl as she watches the mech go ape shit. I could be wrong, but she looked like absolutely horrified at the level of instant carnage that thing doled out despite asking the pilot for assistance. Anyways, cool show. There are a handful of things that make me pause though. Sometimes it trips into saccharin moe territory (this reminds me of Real Drive as well, but I think Real Drive was able to walk that rope a little better) that makes me want to backburner the series, but something interesting usually happens to get me back to intrigued.

My favorite of the season though is Flowers of Evil.
