FUNimation's Parent Company Prepares to Put It On the Auction Block

Don't panic, folks, your DBZ supply isn't going anywhere...yet.

It's no secret that sales of anime and manga are down thanks to the recession, prompting the closure of a handful of publishing houses and distributors. I'm not sure if Minneapolis-based Navarre Corporation never thought there would be lean times when they bought up FUNimation in 2005, but regardless the company began laying the foundation to sell their subsidiary back in May. Now that Navarre has released reports for the first-quarter of the fiscal year listing FUNimation as a "discontinued operation" it seems all but inevitable that its parent company will put it up for sale in the near future.

What does this mean for FUNimation? So far, not a whole heck of a lot. Actually, the company made a tidy profit of over $3 million in the first quarter thanks to strong sales of Dragon Ball Z Kai. While I'm no Gordon Gecko-level businessman, it seems the only way this could go is badly for FUNimation if they're bought out by an interest whose only goal is to liquidate the company's assets by selling off properties, etc.--an idea that seems remote since the company looks poised to expand into the burgeoning sector of online streaming anime.

Whadaya say, folks: if ten thousand of us collectively search our couch cushions for loose change and raid our retirement plans I'm sure we can come up with enough to buy the company out and establish a fan-owned co-op. A man can dream...

If you want your anime to be censored, cut and dubbed by crap disney actors... sure. "

Hold on, I think you should re consider who has the crap actors.

Consider Funni main man numero uno Christopher R. Sabat:

"
I didn't see anything about Chris dealing with Disney, yet I still stand by my statement. Crap disney actors, I don't want a disney roster, simple. By actors I mean int he shows like, "Zack and Cody, I Carly and ect ect..."

@FoxxFireArt:
@FoxxFireArt: iI don't know what reason would they have for censoring a manga. I mean 4 Kids had a pretty common reason, but what was Viz Media's. I mean it I herd how they do there English mangga. In a interview and it seemed that dialouge was straight, but as for blood I am  not sure, but I never seen that Viz ever had reason to censor.

@secretzfan:
That's the whole point. Censoring the manga is idiotic, but they continue to do it.

They also offer no alternative to someone looking for an authentic and uncensored product.
secretzfanon Aug. 5, 2010 at 8:34 p.m.
hey I have seen some parts of the one piece manga and the censorship isn't horrible, but it does do some censors
hitsusatsu11on Aug. 5, 2010 at 9:34 p.m.
@FoxxFireArt: Also VIZ calling Majin Buu Djinn Buu is stupid. However VIZ edits and changes names and such, while Funimation has literally pulled entire dialog for conversations out of thin air. I know you say they offer alternatives when you purchase their DVDs, however the scripts that they put on TV are unforgivingly bad. Why would I want to support a company that butchers the script of my favorite anime's?

@hitsusatsu11:
I haven't seen the FUNimation Dragon Ball Z DVDs, but if the DVDs are accurate in the dub or subtitles. What does it matter what was showed on TV? As long as the DVDs are fine.
@secretzfan:
Censorship is bad. It shouldn't be done. If they are going to censor something. They should offer it uncensored for those who want it.
hitsusatsu11on Aug. 5, 2010 at 9:48 p.m.
@FoxxFireArt: The DVD's have the exact same English dialog as the TV version, which is horribly wrong.

In Funni's dub- Radditz moves faster than light, however Goku's instant transmission is suddenly only lightspeed (both are NEVER said in japanese)
The whole dialog when Kid Buu destroys the earth, completely made up. I mean come on this is pivotal to the show.
Some dialog when Botan is speaking to king enma in YHS about Yusuke as well.
Then the funny voices they give people-why does yusuke's opponents in the dark tournament have to be Irish, and Australian?
Then the names of moves to-Special Beam Canon, WTF is that? Even VIZ better translated moves in DB than Funni, though VIZ makes stupid name choices for characters.

@hitsusatsu11:
What are the subtitles like?
hitsusatsu11on Aug. 5, 2010 at 9:58 p.m.
@FoxxFireArt: Accurate. I know in their DB releases they'll translate moves like this: "Shin Rogga Fufuken" instead of using there dub name. Same with names-Yamucha, not Yamcha, Kurrirn, not Krillin ect.

Kid Buu's destruction of the Earth and Goku's instant transmission brings more action. FUNi is not like Harmony Gold USA. Harmony's dub of Dragon Ball was worse because of the name change of the characters such as Goku to Zero, Korin to Whiskers The Wonder Cat, Bulma to Lena, Krillin to Bongo,  Yamcha to Zedaki, and Oolong to Mao Mao.

If the subtitles are accurate, what's your problem then? If they are offering an accurate translation in the subtitles. They are least offering an accurate translation to those who want it.

VIZ offers nothing in place of their alterations.

I didn't like that the FUNimation version of One Piece aired the Skypiea Arc calling God Eneru "King Eneru", but as long as the subtitles say "God Eneru", I'm fine with it. I just wont wanted the dubs and watch the subtitles. It's an option.
hitsusatsu11on Aug. 5, 2010 at 10:36 p.m.
@Jtaylor83: Brings more action? I prefer DB the way it is originally, not the Chris Sabat, Gen Fukanaga original script.

@FoxxFireArt: Would you buy the certain Viz titles that aren't edited, despite knowing that some of your favorite titles were edited by Viz?

Yet, you said the subtitles on the DVDs are accurate. Why not buy the DVDs if the subtitles are accurate to the original story? If you don't like the dubs. Just don't watch the dubs and watch the subtitles. By your own admission is accurate.

I don't buy VIZ, because they don't offer an accurate alternative to their edits. There is no unedited version anywhere in English. The only place I can get these stories uncensored and accurate is from scanlations.
hitsusatsu11on Aug. 5, 2010 at 10:56 p.m.
@FoxxFireArt: I don't want to support Funi at all, since all they do is ruin my favorite anime's. They don't do good work like ADV and others. I'm not supporting them, why would I so they can get more money to put more butchered anime on TV? Some VIZ titles are completely unedited, yet you do not buy them, its the same principle. We both don't want to support companies that overall don't hold true to the intended original as a whole, even though certain times they do. (unedited titles for Viz, subbed for Funi)
FoxxFireArt moderator is online on Aug. 5, 2010 at 11:15 p.m.
@hitsusatsu11:
They really don't compare. I wont buy VIZ because they offer no alternatives to any of their edits on anything they change.

Though FUNimation may change things in the dubs. They offer the subtitles unedited. By your own admission, the subtitles are accurate.

VIZ only puts out the edited product. FUNimation puts out dubs and unedited subtitles. FUNimation offers options. VIZ offers no options.
hitsusatsu11on Aug. 5, 2010 at 11:32 p.m.
@FoxxFireArt: So Funi can offer the same alternatives as anyone who can translate Japanese, Funi is supposed to be a big distributer, I expect more from them then simple subbing. Also I do not like the look of their remastered version, (in certain scenes of DB the colors of clothes are to exaggerated) and there is no Funi alternative to that. And basically what your saying is you don't care if the integrity of the anime is preserved as seen by the masses, so long as you can see your titles uncut? (in regards to viz) But what I'm saying is I don't want to support a company that says - well change and butcher the script of your favorite anime and put it on TV, but hey buy our product anyway and as long as you fork over the cash we'll give you the original.

@hitsusatsu11:
As long as they are offering the story in an accurate manner in some fashion. I don't see the problem. You have said that the subtitles are accurate.

As long as FUNimation is offering an accurate product. That's all they need to do. There are edited versions for people who want that, and accurate subtitles that aren't edited for people who want that. It's an option. Your argument seems to be that FUNimation provides options.

I've heard rumors that FUNimation only changed God Eneru to King Eneru for the dub TV appearance. The rumor is that on the DVDs the dubs says God Eneru. I don't see a problem with that if they are giving me the option of an accurate product somewhere

VIZ offers no alternative anywhere. They edit something, and that is all they make. Nothing else. There is no official accurate English option.
FUNimation offers two options. Edited dubs and accurate subtitles. As long as one option is accurate. I don't see the problem.
hitsusatsu11on Aug. 6, 2010 at 12:19 a.m.
@FoxxFireArt: Its not just editing, they change the storyline through made up dialog, its nice they provide options, but I still don't want to support a company that presents non true to the original anime to the masses.
FoxxFireArt moderator is online on Aug. 6, 2010 at 12:33 a.m.
@hitsusatsu11:
Isn't that a bit snobbish?

Your argument seems to be that they shouldn't be supported for changing anything in any way at any time.

My problem with VIZ is that they censor and edit but offer no alternative to those edits. FUNimation does offer alternatives in an accurate manner.

It doesn't matter what is presented to the masses. Just as long as an accurate option is provided. If VIZ was providing the series they edit in an unedited, English form. I would support that, but they don't. That is what separates them from FUNimation. Options.
